E-bike safety reminders from Rocklin PD

Rocklin Police remind parents and children who ride e-bikes to know their bike class and basic rider safety before hitting the roads this summer. In 2025, police responded to 33 collisions involving bicycles within the city, 25 of which involved an e-bike rider, some with passengers. The majority involved were juvenile riders between the ages of 11 and 15. E-bike laws in California include: * Class 1 (pedal assist) and Class 2 (throttle assist) up to 20 mph can be operated in the bike lane and on the sidewalk in Rocklin. Helmet required for all ages under the age of 18. * Class 3 (pedal assist up to 28 mph) riders must be 16 and older. A helmet is required for all ages, and ride only in the bike lane or street. E-scooters require a license or permit, helmet and cannot be ridden on the sidewalk. OHV can be ridden off the highway only; they are not street legal. Licenses are not required for e-bike classes 1-3, though class 3 is limited to 16 and older. All e-bike classes are not allowed in Rocklin parks/trails or on the pump track. Safety reminders: * Always wear a properly fitted helmet. * Ride in the bike lane WITH the flow of traffic. * Ride respectfully (watch for pedestrians and obey traffic signals).
