Zebras send 18 runners to Masters meet

Lincoln High School's cross country team is batting .720 so far in the postseason. Eighteen of the Zebras' 25 runners qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet Saturday at Willow Hills Park in Folsom.The varsity girls finished ninth in the subsection last Saturday and will advance a team. Senior Shannon Snook set the pace by finishing 18th. She was followed by senior Heather Felt (24th), sophomore Abi Lund (45th), junior Arial Scholl (89th) and junior Sammy Klipp (97th).Freshman Kyle Ebert was the only Lincoln runner to advance in the varsity boys race by finishing 22nd. Junior Travis Miskell injured his knee during the race and placed 44th.Lincoln's junior varsity boys and girls teams both qualified for the Masters meet. Katy Mercier earned a medal for the girls by finishing 14th. Dylan Toerpe was 14th and Jake Palmyra 15th for the boys to earn medals.SoccerThe U12 boys FC Lincoln Strikers soccer team received more treats than tricks when they competed in the Sierra Gold Halloweenfest Tournament in Placerville on Oct. 30 and 31.The Strikers overcame a 2-0 deficit to tie the Sacramento Force 4-4 in the first round. They lost to the El Dorado Hills Avengers and then bounced back with a 4-0 victory over the Fair Oaks Force.Another two-goal comeback by the Strikers resulted in a 4-2 win over the 49er Rush in the consolation game.Frank Villanueva-Angelo, Kyle Ludlow, and Esteban Zepeda scored goals for the Strikers in the tournament.CollegeThe 2007 Sierra College women's tennis team will take its rightful place in the school's Athletic Hall of Fame when the class of 2011 is inducted Jan. 22 by the Wolverine Athletic Association.The tennis team was an obvious choice after winning the 2007 state championship.The other inductees will be J.P Greco (football), Ken Hashagen (basketball, track and cross country coach) Susan McVay (contributor) Ed Norton (football and wrestling) and Kandace Waklhaler (swimming and water polo).Tickets for the ceremony, which will be 11 a.m. in the Campus Center, are available for purchase by calling (916) 660-8100.SoftballA recent trip to Pleasanton was worthwhile for the Lincoln Hills Coyote 60s Black softball team. The 60s went 5-0 in their final tournament of the year to bring home the championship.D.J. Cox belted two home runs for the 60s. J.R. Jackson, John Griffin and Bec Cannistraci also homered. Tom Westlake pitched in all five victories and was supported by a defense that turned 12 double plays.The Coyote All-Stars played their first winter league doubleheader Oct. 28 and swept Tirapelli's Falcons in Sacramento by a combined score of 53-12. Roger Cain launched three homers to lead the All-Stars.
