Vista track team impresses at divisionals

Vista del Lago's track and field team had an impressive performance Saturday at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championships held at Hughes Stadium at Sac City College. Vista's varsity boys' team placed second behind only Turlock, while the varsity girls' team took third place overall. Vista turned in several outstanding performances, including from Collin Lund, Kyron Gulley and Brenna Mannion. Lund won two individual events and Division 2 championships, as he placed first in the 200 and 400-meter runs with respective times of 21.71 and 48.82. He looks to have a great shot at qualifying to the state meet in one or both events if he has a good day Saturday at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championships at Folsom High. Lund also ran on the Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team along with Mason Hooey, Colin Mannion and Gulley, which took second place behind only Woodcreek with a time of 3:24.3, the third-fastest time in Vista history. Gulley was impressive in the horizontal jumps, as he took first in the triple jump with a leap of 44-2, and also placed third in the long jump with his personal-best mark of the season 21-10.75. Mannion followed up her win in the 3,200 meters at the trials on May 12, by placing first in the 1,600 meters in 5:04.65. Her time in the 3,200 of 10:37.89 was her personal-best and shattered the meet record of 10:51.38, which had been in the books as the mark to beat since 2011. Mannion also ran on Vista's 4x400-meter relay team along with Valeriya Fomicheva, Madison Nguyen and Matlin O'Brien, as the team placed third with a seasonal-best time of 4:09.56. Reid Blake also turned in a solid performance in the 800 meters, as he took fifth place in 1:56.19. Vista had four other athletes place in the top-five of their events at divisionals. Sean Gottstein placed third in the high jump with a leap of 5-10. Madeline Hess had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the discus (114-0) and the shot put (33-03), Dylan Le took fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.92, while Madeline Shaw placed fifth in the triple jump in 34-3.25. Other participants included Nguyen (seventh, 100 meters, 12.88), Fomicheva (eighth, triple jump, 32-3.50), Hooey (eighth, pole vault, 12-6), Ben Sanderson (10th, discus, 115-0), Teddy Beavers (11th, 1,600, 4:34.13), Aubree Benoit (11th, 800, 2:29.43) and the boys' 4x100-meter relay team (Hooey, Mannion, Drake Menezes and Areeb Nayeem).
