Residents urged to use caution as fire season approaches

The Rocklin Fire Department is reminding residents to use extreme caution as an incoming period of elevated fire weather conditions is in effect for the region. According to the National Weather Service Sacramento (NWS), Red Flag conditions were issued for the region on May 16 at 2:11 a.m. and remain in effect until 8 p.m. Friday, May 22. Low humidity, high temperatures and strong winds are creating dangerous fire weather that even the smallest of sparks could cause a rapid ignition and spread of a wildfire. "Dry vegetation combined with these weather conditions means fires can start easily and grow quickly," said Rocklin Fire Department Chief Williams. "We ask everyone to be especially vigilant and avoid any activities that could create a spark." Rocklin Fire recommends the following safety measures: * Avoid using outdoor equipment that can produce sparks (lawn mowers, chainsaws, grinders, etc.) during peak wind periods. * Do not discard cigarette butts or matches on the ground. * Refrain from outdoor burning, including campfires, barbeques in undeveloped areas and fireworks. * Ensure vehicles are properly maintained and avoid driving or parking over dry grass. * Have a defensible space around your home and ensure fire extinguishers are accessible. * Report any smoke or suspicious fires immediately by calling 911. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring local weather updates from the National Weather Service and following Rocklin Fire Department alerts through the City of Rocklin website and all local media.
