Oakmont is D4 champ; Murphy leads Granite Bay

The Oakmont girls track and field team claimed the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championship on May 16 at Hughes Stadium at Sacramento City College. The Vikings scored 95 team points to finish 14 points ahead of runner-up Lathrop. Amy Geluk led the way for Oakmont, as she won three individual section titles in the 100 hurdles (14.96 seconds), 300 hurdles (46.70) and the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches). Geluk qualified for the Masters championships Saturday at Folsom High in the 100 hurdles and high jump and has a good shot to qualify in both events. She is an alternate in the 300 hurdles. Geluk also anchored the section championship 4x400-meter relay team with Jenna Rothlisberger, Alana Bodenhausen and Gracie Grant, which posted a time of 4:07.65. Izzy Peters also qualified for the Masters in the pole vault, as she placed fourth at divisionals by clearing 10 feet. Peters would need a huge personal record to qualify for the state meet, but she's had a great season considering it's her first year in pole vault. Peters also placed sixth in the long jump (13-11.75). Oakmont's 4x100-meter relay team of Jenna Rothlisberger, Mariah Williams, Gracie Grant and Katelynn Widdoson won the Division IV championship with a time of 49.36. Grant also won the 100 (12.46) and 200 (25.8). Williams took fifth in the 100 (12.78) and sixth in the 200 (26.29). Rothlisberger took sixth in the 400 (1:02.85). Other placers included Amber Spragia (ninth, 300 hurdles, 51.58), Bodenhausen (10th, 800, 2:35.60) and Mayrim Millan (12th, 1600). On the boys side, Malachi Alexander will be competing in the 110 and 300 hurdles at Masters, as he placed first at divisionals in the 110 (14.73) and 300 (38.48), the fastest time of the day in all the divisions. Alexander's best chance at state will be the 300 hurdles, but also could qualify in the 110 if he has a great day. Also competing will be Caleb Hernandez in the 3200, who has run a 9:35.59. While his chances of qualifying for state are slim, Hernandez has his eyes set on the Oakmont school record which was set a decade ago. Hernandez also placed third in the 1600 in 4:27.88. Oakmont's 4x400-meter relay team of Lennox Bennett, Hernandez, Miles Guth and Alexander took fifth place in 3:33.71. Other top performances came from Guth, who placed ninth in the 800 (2:02.53) and Jaciel Garcia, who placed 14th in the 1,600 in 4:49.09. Granite Bay Granite Bay had several top performances in the Division I finals, led by Thomas Murphy, who pole vaulted 14-0 to take first place. On the girls' side, Jocelyn Mays was the team's top performer, as she lowered her school record by running a 12.03 in the 100 to place second. Teammate Molly Peterson placed second in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 11-0 to qualify for masters. In the triple jump, Lucas Gray placed third with a leap of 44-9 to qualify for Masters. Granite Bay's final qualifier was Maddi Truppa in the 800, as she took sixth place with a time of 2:19.62. Hudson Nemitz and Carson Uribe did not qualify for Masters but still performed well at divisionals, as Nemitz placed fourth in the high jump (5-10), while Uribe placed fifth in the 800 (1:58.16). Other Grizzlies who competed at divisionals included Gus Van Vezler (high jump, seventh place, 5-8), Caleb Wiseman (discus, ninth, 115-11), Mason Boyd (100, ninth, 11.04) and the girls' 4x100-meter relay team of Sophia Fastidio, Payton Osenbaugh, Kaelani Dwinell and Jocelyn Mays (ninth, 50.53) and the boys' 4x400-meter relay team of Boyd, Uribe, Wiseman and Andrew Bray (sixth, 3:27.08). "Our athletes represented Granite Bay with heart, determination and some incredible performances against the best competition in the section," Granite Bay coach Shane Jackson said. "We're incredibly proud of this team and everything they accomplished this season. The Grizzlies continue to prove they belong among the best in the section."
