Art Walk takes flight in Old Town Auburn

Flights of fancy these days are often hard to come by, but as in years past, the Auburn Art's Commission's (AAC) main ask of the art-going public has been to take a walk through Old Town for a breath of art and leisure that Auburn is steadily becoming known for. AAC's Auburn Art Walk is a bright seasonal cavalcade of painters of all walks and mediums, from those that dabble in anything from the dappling textures of acrylics to the soft ghost-like images of watercolor to the abstractions of collage. The works of these artists adorn the walls of numerous local shops and restaurants for the public to see. It's a series of styles and attitudes; one of expressions and commentary on multiple subjects, both minimalist and maximalist. And it's an eclectic feast to the eye while the hosting eateries work to satiate the tastebuds – the Art Walk serving as a two-fer for local businesses that have seen increases in their foot traffic because of it. A huge draw in previous years for both serious aficionados of art as well as casual onlookers who routinely enjoy the businesses, the Art Walk has been a labor of love for all of those involved – especially Mary Pivetti, an influence and guiding light for the showcase for the last couple of years. Pivetti has seen numerous artists cultivate works and show paintings and she is excited about this next batch. "I hope people leave with a greater appreciation for the talented artists in our region and the businesses that help support a vibrant arts community," she said. The upcoming Art Walk will kick off in Old Town (Downtown will get their own in August) on Sunday, June 7 from noon to 4 o'clock with 18 different local shops showing the art of over 20 different artists. It's something that the entire family can enjoy, with a reception where people can meet the artists and enjoy live music, free refreshments, and there will be free arts activities for kids as well. Above all else, the Art Walk is a chance for community and connection, which is something that Ginger Barrett takes away from the event. Barrett, who is a participating watercolorist, said, "The Auburn Art Walk has been more than just an art event for me — it's been a way back into community. After moving back to Auburn a few years ago, it helped us reconnect with the creative spirit of this town and the people who make it so special. I've found encouragement, friendship, and connection here. In many ways, I feel like I found my people."
