Granite Bay's scenic trails and Folsom Lake beachfront offers a variety of ways to explore the outdoors during the summer months. But there's another way that you may have yet to consider – on horseback. Boarding on the Lake is a horse boarding facility that also offers lessons, trail rides and horse leasing. Kal Shehadeh, owner of Boarding on the Lake and long-time rider, said he envisioned running a boarding facility at 9095 Auburn Folsom Road when hiking the trails with his brother. "My parents had a house about a mile away from here, and we would hike along the trails here and I would always tell him, I said, 'You know, if this property ever came up for sale, I would love to run it as a horse boarding place," he recalled. That opportunity came in 2006, and 19 years later the family-owned facility has 45 horses, with 20 of those being used for lessons and leasing. Shehadeh said the facility holds great memories - like meeting his wife, Jennifer Lin, when he took her on a trail ride - and has an amazing group of people, including those who have been there for 18 years. The trails include portions of woods, lake and rock formations, providing a nice mix of everything during trail rides. Shehadeh said the trail by the lake is their most popular, as you are able to ride next to the lake and grab great photo ops. "It's just pretty blessed to be here right on the lake with the beautiful views," Shehadeh said, adding this year's views should be really nice due to the lake level. Additionally, Boarding on the Lake hosts week-long camps for kids during the summer months. Shehadeh said kids can expect to learn everything related to horses – from riding to horsemanship and the horses' anatomy – and arts and crafts, trading screen time for a fun day outdoors. "We're here to kind of help the community kind of get access to something maybe they don't get elsewhere," he said. Horse camp sessions are from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday through Friday. Registration for 2026 camp dates is currently open. According to the facility's website, spots are still open for the Aug. 3-7 session.
