'Danmark,' Coast Guard training subject of talk

Placer County Council of the Navy League members and guests will meet and hear from Gerda Percival, a Dane who arrived in the United States in 1953, at its next meeting Monday, June 15. After a career in retail in the San Francisco area, she married Dr. David Percival and moved to Foresthill, where she became interested in local government. She served on the Placer County Planning Commission for more than seven years. After Dr. David's death, she moved to Auburn and now lives in Dayton, Nevada. She will talk about the history of the Training Ship "Danmark" as it relates to the United States Coast Guard during World War II. The Placer County Council of the Navy League of the United States is a national civilian organization that supports the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and U.S. Flag Merchant Marine. In addition to its more than 200 individual members, the council is supported by three local Community Affiliate Members: TGH Aviation, Lassila Funeral Chapel and Chapel of the Hills. Dinner meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at Auburn Veterans Memorial Hall, 100 East Street. The hall's doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for a social hour, then dinner and the meeting will begin at 6:30. The catered dinners are $22 per person, so reservations are necessary and may be made by calling Bonnie Potter at 530-823-2820 by Friday, June 12.
