Whitney falls to Destiny Christian in D1 NorCal final

Whitney head coach April Steele's message to the Wildcats on Saturday was simple: the final score did not diminish what they had accomplished. After two lengthy road trips in five days, a graduation week filled with schedule changes and one final battle under the Saturday afternoon sun, the sixth-seeded Wildcats saw their historic postseason run come to an end with a 6-3 loss to top-seeded Destiny Christian in the CIF NorCal Division I softball championship game. Destiny Christian, which entered the championship ranked No. 9 nationally, capped a perfect 31-0 season with the victory. The Lions are just the fifth team in state history to go unbeaten with 30 or more wins on a season. While the defeat denied Whitney its first NorCal title, it could not overshadow what the Wildcats had already achieved. Under Steele, the program reached its first regional championship game, capping a journey marked by perseverance through years of postseason heartbreak. The Wildcats reached the NorCal semifinals in 2023, endured the disappointment of a postseason forfeit before the semifinal round in 2024, and returned to the semifinals in Steele's first season in 2025 before finally breaking through to Saturday's Division I championship game. As the No. 6 seed, Whitney had to win twice on the road to reach the final. The Wildcats traveled nearly four hours each way to Clovis on Friday after the semifinal was moved up a day so players could participate in graduation ceremonies Thursday. They battled through triple-digit temperatures and an eight-inning victory before making another lengthy trip less than 24 hours later for Saturday's championship game. Through it all, every player remained with the team. "The message to them was simple: we made school history," Steele said. "I've been part of this program since 2005, and this is the furthest we've ever gone. Every single player stayed until the end. They were in this for the long haul." Steele applauded the Wildcats for overcoming every challenge they faced, including moving to Division I for the section playoffs and enduring the grueling grind of the D-I regional tournament. "They moved us up to Division I, put us in this bracket, made us go on the road and threw every challenge they could at us, but every single girl was still here and still fighting until the very end, said Steele, who added that commitment is rooted in a culture passed down from previous classes. "Last year's seniors did it for us, and this year's seniors said they would do it for the underclassmen," Steele said. "We started this fight together, and we're going to end it together. They truly believe in each other." The veteran coach said the seniors' desire to keep playing had nothing to do with outside opportunities. Despite graduating on Thursday, they were driven simply by earning more time together with each postseason win. "They don't want high school to end," Steele said. "They love each other, they love this school, they love the maroon and gold, and they love competing. They actually wanted high school to keep going, and I think that's a testament to the culture we have in this program and at our school." The Wildcats jumped on the Lions early, as sophomore catcher Kaitlyn Johnson belted a two-run homer that gave Whitney an early cushion. Destiny Christian wasted no time striking back however, as two-time California Gatorade Player of the Year Ayla Tuua responded with a towering solo shot to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first. From there it was a stalemate before the Lions broke things open in the fifth thanks to a three-run shot from sophomore Ella Dossey and a two-run homer by Roxanne Sardo. Whitney would fight back in the seventh as Bri Seffens picked up an RBI single with two outs, but the five-run fifth inning was too much to overcome. Tuua, an LSU signee, was dominant in the circle for the Lions. She took over in relief in the second and pitched the remainder of the 5 ⅔ innings, striking out nine and holding the Wildcats to one run on two hits while walking two. Before recording the final two outs, she had an emotion visit in the circle with her mom and Destiny Christian head coach Shannon Tuua as the team came together one final time on the field. "She was my first coach when I was five years old. She started the Diamond Divas, so that's really where everything began for me. I'm grateful that I got to open and close this chapter with her. I know she's always going to support me, but it was really nice to end on a high note," said Tuua. "I started tearing up in the last inning just looking around the field. There are so many memories, so many triumphs and failures that people don't always see. To experience all of that with this team meant a lot." Tuua spoke about what it meant to her to spend four years at Destiny Christian and how it felt to finish her high school career on top with a NorCal crown. "It was incredible. There really aren't enough words to explain how grateful I am for all the support not just from my teammates and coaches, but from the teachers, students and administrators. Everybody pours into us. Even when you're behind in class or going through something, people are always willing to help or pray for you. I appreciate it so much," said Tuua. "If I'm not having success, somebody else steps up. That's what makes this team special." Whitney had a strong performance in the circle from sophomore Taylor Cordell, who was steady through five innings before the Lions mounted their comeback. Cordell struck out eight and surrendered six runs on nine hits, but Steele said that she had nothing to hang her head about after the game. "She's a competitor. She doesn't want to come out of the game. She wants to be in the game and she wants to compete. She's still young, and I can only imagine what the next two years are going to look like for her," Steele said of Cordell. "She's just a young sophomore. She threw a complete game on Tuesday, then threw in 101-degree heat yesterday for eight innings, got back on the road, woke up this morning and had to throw again." The Wildcats wrap up the season at 26-9 overall and although it was a bitter defeat to end the year, Steele says the girls should look back fondly on the season. Whitney's senior class leaves behind one of the most successful eras in program history. After experiencing the highs and lows of multiple postseason runs, the Wildcats ultimately delivered the school's deepest run yet and established a standard future teams will chase. Some members of the class will graduate with multiple section championships, but Steele said the lasting legacy goes beyond trophies. Said Steele, "This senior class has been through a lot. They've made history from the beginning, and they were all in."
