Folsom girls go 4-0 at Summer Splash tourney

Folsom High's varsity girls' basketball team had a great start to its spring season by winning all four games at the annual Summer Splash tournament held this weekend at Vista del Lago High School. Folsom picked up big wins against Atwater and Woodcreek on Saturday, slipped by Lincoln on Sunday morning and then finished the tournament with a solid performance in a win against Spanish Springs out of Reno. Folsom coach Lynn Wolking saw a lot of good things out of his team. "You never know what you have in the summer," Wolking said. "I don't recall if I've only had one senior before and that's what I have this year. It will be an interesting group. I've also got one freshman playing with the varsity team." Wolking is particularly happy with the speed and athleticism that the team showed at the tournament. "We've got some speed and athleticism that I'm excited about," Wolking said. "In our game against Spanish Springs, we played much better than we played earlier against Lincoln and won by 30 points. Our ball movement, speed, ability to press was all much better." What made the performance look so good is all of Wolking's returning players have improved over the last three months. "Everyone is better," Wolking said. "They've worked on the things we've asked them to work on and they're all more confident. I'm excited about our athleticism and our intelligence. I think it will be a fun year. The challenge will be leadership. I've got a pretty quiet team." Among the team's top players over the weekend included guard Lily Reed, who will be a junior. Amayah Castillo, who Wolking said didn't play much last year, is much improved and had a really good weekend. Ashley Alexander made a strong showing on Saturday. Freshman Jada Harrison played well and returning player Kaitlyn Hardie has also stepped up her game from last year. Other team members include Bea Greule, Amelie del Pozo, Kayla Harrison, Laney Warrington and Jayden Hill. Wolking said the junior varsity team also went 4-0 in the tournament, so together with the varsity team the Bulldogs went 8-0. Folsom will compete in the Whitney Tournament this weekend with one varsity team and two junior varsity teams.
