Burdge Hotel: A landmark in Lincoln's history

The Historic Burdge Hotel was a prominent 19th-century house and lodging destination located on 5th Street in Downtown Lincoln. Initially the hotel was operated by Stephen and Melissa Burdge in the 1870s. Tragically the hotel burned down during the devastating July 11, 1883, downtown fire which destroyed the majority of local businesses and livelihoods. After the fire burned down the historic hotel, it was rebuilt across G Street in downtown later becoming a central landmark in the area's economic and social history before changing functions in the mid-20th century. The original corner lot, which was previously home to the hotel, was later purchased by Gladding McBean and Co. who built a brick building on the site for their own usage. This prominent block-long structure eventually housed Butterfield Brand Feeds before being converted into modern day restaurants, cafes and gift shops located on 533 Lincoln Boulevard and 5th Street today. Although the Burdge Hotel never made it into the 20th century, its red brick structure is a permanent reminder of the history, business, sacrifice and dedication to Lincoln.
