Arrest made in fatal May 26 crash near Clipper Gap

An arrest was been made in a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred near Clipper Gap on May 26. Around 11:12 p.m. on May 26, CHP officers responded to a major injury crash on Interstate 80. According to CHP, the preliminary investigation revealed a commercial vehicle traveling westbound collided with the center divider, resulting in its trailer separating and entering the eastbound lanes. The trailer then collided with a Ford F-150 traveling eastbound. CHP confirmed the driver of the Ford died as a result of the crash and the driver of the commercial vehicle fled the scene on foot. CHP investigators identified the suspect as Robert Glenn Bell, 60, of Stockton. CHP reported Bell was located and arrested in Martinez on Thursday following a coordinated effort with the Placer County Regional Auto Theft Task Force. Bell was booked into the Placer County Main Jail and charged with felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter. According to the online arrest report, Bell remains in custody and is also charged with a Santa Cruz County felony warrant for elder abuse. "This arrest represents the tireless dedication of our investigators and allied law enforcement partners to seek justice for the victim and their family," said Captain Andy Beasley, commander of the Auburn Area CHP. "We are grateful for the assistance provided by the community and proud of the collaborative efforts of the Placer County RATTF and Auburn CHP personnel that led to the successful apprehension of Mr. Bell."
