50 years ago: Dedication ceremony for Old Lincoln School Project

50 Years Ago Population 3,179 (U.S. Census 1960 and 1970) Old School One of the events early on the day of the Fourth of July will be a brief dedication ceremony for the Old Lincoln School Project. Restoration of the school building, which was part of one of Lincoln's early day elementary schools, began as a project of a field preservation class of California State University, Sacramento, under the guidance of David Tucker. The project was later taken over by the local community led by a committee headed by Richard Wyatt, who has contributed numerous hours in refurbishing the school building to restore it to its original condition. Eventually it will be furnished in keeping with the era of its beginnings in the late 1800's and also house a local museum. The dedication ceremonies are scheduled for 9 a.m. with Kenneth Longergan, county superintendent of schools, as speaker. A flag raising will be part of the ceremonies. The Old Lincoln School Project Committee has published a booklet, "Western Placer County School Ties," recounting the history of area schools. The booklet will be available on the Fourth of July. Its cost is $2.00. Lincoln High vice-principal John Bozzo will act as the master of ceremonies for the dedication ceremony. Music will be provided by current and former Lincoln High band members under the direction of Chantal Spoor. Note: The Old School Project is the building on the corner of 1st and L Streets, next to Glen Edwards Middle School and has served as a location for Head Start. While the museum didn't successfully come to fruition, the Lincoln Area Archives Museum is open Thurs-Sat 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Photographs of the original Lincoln School and a copy of the booklet mentioned above are available to view. Also available for a low purchase price are several area history books written by the late Jerry Logan, museum co-founder and local historian as well as a beautiful coffee table style hardback book featuring Gladding, McBean & Co. architectural terra cotta projects. Bells Lincoln's church bells will ring out at 11 a.m. on the Fourth of July. The local observance will be part of a nationwide bellringing marking the bicentennial. At 2 p.m. Philadelphia time – 11 a.m. Lincoln time – all church bells and other bells across the U.S. will ring simultaneously in honor of the nation's 200th birthday. 75 Years Ago Population 2,410 (U.S. Census 1940 and 1950) Water Lincoln wastes over 1,250,000 gallons of water on an average day. That's what the Placer County Water Agency says. The people of Lincoln currently consume 100 per cent more water per person than any place else in the county. That figures to 340 gallons of water per person on a given day. Using the average consumption of 2 ½ million gallons of water on a summer's day and you come up with the tremendous amounts of gallons of water people are apparently wasting. Add to the high consumption factor that this is a drought year and water rates will be going sky high in a year or so and one can only come to one conclusion-conservation. In an attempt to put some bite into the conservation of water program, the city council has put the town on notice that it will enforce the provisions of an existing water ordinance. The ordinance states consumers must not allow water faucets or toilets to leak, lawns or gardens cannot be watered from an open hose and a spray or nozzle must be used in all cases, lawns and flowers may only be watered from between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. unless written permission is given from the water department and the sprinkling of public streets by private property owners is prohibited. According to the ordinance, any violations of the above provisions will constitute authority to the Department of Public Works to install a meter and thereafter charge the meter rates established by council policy plus the cost of the meter and meter box. City Administrator Gail Wingard stated violators will be given a warning notice by the police first and on the second violation will be issued a citation. There are various ways in which a homeowner may conserve water, including fixing leaks from the faucets; a slow leak wastes about 25 gallons in a 24-hour period while a moderate leak wastes 100 gallons in 24 hours. Cutting down on the amount of water needed to flush a toilet. A normal toilet fixture uses from six to seven gallons a flush while only half that amount is needed. Homeowners could bend downward the rod going to the ball float. This would stop the toilet from filling up with more water than absolutely necessary. If every toilet in Lincoln were adjusted this way an estimated 48,600 gallons of water could be saved daily. Stop gutter flooding. Untold thousands of gallons of water are wasted daily by people allowing water to run into the gutter while watering their lawns. Conserve water by pooling activities, a simple solution to cut back on water consumption. For example, don't do a half load of wash, wait and do a full load. The following list notes the amount of water needed for the following activities: automatic clothes washer, 35 gallons per cycle; garbage disposal, 3 gallons per cycle; automatic dishwasher, 10 gallons per cycle; dishwashing in sink, eight gallons per cycle; cooking, 20 gallons per day; shower, 15 gallons; bath tub, 38 gallons; car wash, 20 to 40 gallons; swimming pool, 7,480 gallons and washing hands and face, half-gallon a day. 100 Years Ago Population 1,324 (U.S. Census 1900, 1910 and 1920) Frigid Air Ira Ahart of the News Stand has had installed a large electric Frigidaire cabinet in which to pack ice cream, water ices, etc. This fine cabinet is cooled with electricity and a lot of coils, and goes below freezing point; always ready and no bother. Ahart's increased ice cream and soft drinks sales necessitated the improvement. July 4th There comes a certain thrill with the use of the phrase "The Glorious Fourth." It is born partly of our remembered history, partly of our boyhood recollections of celebrations of the day in former years. There springs to mind the pictures of the dauntless patriots who dared their all, and boldly signed the pledge of it, that America should be free. There comes to mind the Liberty Bell, that tore its brazen throat apart in proclamation of the glorious news. The stately figure of Washington rises before us and makes us very proud as we recall the loyalty and devotion and courage and service that won for him the fictitious name "Father of his Country." Then the glorious names of the early battles come crowding upon our memories: Bunker Hill, Trenton, Ticonderoga, Valley Forge, Guilford Courthouse, Yorktown; and the urge is upon us to hurray about it all over again; to fire off the canon; to explode the fireworks; to expand our chests in patriotic pride and to talk in pompous phrases of our power and grandeur as a nation. This is as it should be. It does us good. It does the children good. It does the country good. As little as we may be conscious of it, we are always a bit better Americans for experiencing such emotions even though they be somewhat florid and all too transient. So, let every true American enter whole-heartedly into whatever celebration of the day may have been arranged for in his community. Note: I wish you all a happy and safe 4th of July celebration.
