Folsom girls finish 14-0

Folsom High's varsity girls' basketball team wrapped up an outstanding month of June with a trip to Colfax to play two games on June 24. The Bulldogs won them both, beating Chico, 63-39 and then Colfax, 56-46. The game against Colfax was a good one. Folsom led by only four points but pulled away late to win by 10. "Last time we played Colfax we won by four, but this time we won by 10," Folsom High coach Lynn Wolking said. "It was intense. When you know you're playing a talented, well-coached team, the energy level on the court is high and it gets higher as the game goes on." Folsom trailed by four at halftime and in the fourth quarter was behind by six points. "Then Jayden (Hill) hit a three and Amaya Castillo went off and hit a couple layups in traffic and a three. Laney Warrington hit a three and Mallory Goldsby had a late steal and a layup." Castillo has had a great summer for Folsom. "Last year she played varsity, but her playing time was limited," Wolking said. "In the spring, she regained her confidence and it's been an absolute joy. She's a cool kid with a big personality and she can score the ball and her defense has improved. "She's had several games where she's scored 10 to 15 points. I always knew she had the talent, but she's really putting it together and playing with energy and effort on defense. She's playing with confidence and that's been the key. With any athlete, when they've got confidence, it makes them much harder to play against and it's hard to have confidence when she wasn't playing much last season." The game against Chico was not eventful. Folsom got an early lead and extended it in the second half. The two wins were a great way for Folsom to finish off their summer. "We've got a lot of young players and everyone has been taking their turn stepping up," Wolking said. "The varsity finished the summer with a 14-0 record and our JV team was 15-3 so our program had a really good June.
