Planning for evacuations: Lesser-publicized tips

By now, we've all read about what to pack in your Go Bag. Have you packed yours? I recently heard a Red Cross presentation and got a few additional tips. Additional items for Go Bag: · Mask and earplugs for the evacuation center. · N95 face masks for filtering smoke. · Paper list of critical phone numbers, including neighbors in case cell towers are out. · Paper list of motel phone numbers and addresses not too close to where you live. · Pet food and leashes. · Pens, paper, playing cards, reading for tracking contacts you've made and entertainment. Put a note on your Go Bag what else to take if evacuated: · Keep all meds and supplements in a box you can grab. · Take logins if you only keep a paper copy. If you are evacuated: · Put a note on your front door letting emergency personnel know you have evacuated. · Let neighbors with a key to your home know where your Go Bag is in case you are not home when evacuated. If you have time, grab these before you leave: · Chargers, a power stick if you have one, PCs, tablets. · Jewelry. · Important photos. · Sleeping bags. · Water. Have in your home in case utilities are shut off and you remain in your home · Extra batteries. · Fill your bathtub with water for flushing, etc. · Drinking water and dry or canned foods for 3-4 days. · Water filter. Other tips: · Add the Red Cross app to your phone for resources. · Have a meeting place for your family in case you are separated when evacuated and cell towers are out. · Have an idea where you might stay if evacuated – friends, relatives, motels some distance from home. · Keep your gas tank half full during fire season. · If evacuation warning, leave early to avoid traffic.
