$35 to watch a debate

Recently, I read that the candidates for U.S. Congress District 6, Dr. Richard Pan and Rep. Kevin Kiley, will participate in a forum on Oct. 8 at Johnson Hall in Roseville. The article stated it is open to the public and will be the first of several. What got my attention wasn't the fact that Kiley is finally having a face-to-face event for his constituents (about time!), but the fact that attendees will have to pay $35 for the privilege. I don't believe I've ever heard something like this before. Is this going to be the norm from now on if we want to see and hear from our elected officials? I'm not OK with this … are you? Rosalie Wohlfromm Auburn Kiley doesn't deserve constituent service award Dear editor, On July 17, Gold Mountain California News Media reported that Rep. Kevin Kiley (I-CA) received the 2026 Democracy Award from the Congressional Management Foundation for Best of Constituent Service. As a constituent of Kiley's, I believe this award does not reflect the experience of people in this district. Firstly, Congressman Kiley has not done a public town hall with his constituents since March 27, 2025; that is more than a year ago, and it was over a phone call. The congressman has also never held an in-person town hall while in Congress. One of the basic duties of a congressman is to hear constituents' needs; Kiley has not done this. Secondly, the congressman has attended few public events; although he has gone on ceremonial and photo-op tours, it is hard to see his work in meaningful effect across our district. A congressman should be known and traveling across the district to hear from constituents. Lastly, Congressman Kiley is not working for his constituents' needs. Public meetings allow constituents to voice their opinions and give feedback to officials, and due to a lack of public meetings and open discourse, constituents cannot voice their opinions on how Kiley voted on gutting Medicare and public education (HR 1) and voted in support of continuing the war in Iran (H.Con.Res.89). Kiley does not deserve this award for Constituent Service because the congressman does not provide basic, frequent public engagement with town halls, open dialogue and visible response throughout the district. For these reasons, I believe Kiley has not demonstrated the level of constituent service to receive this award. How did you assess the value of our home?
