Reynolds claims 6th Tevis Cup victory

The 70th running of the Tevis Cup 100-Mile Ride wrapped up Saturday night with a familiar champion in one of the event's better completion rates in recent years despite triple-digit temperatures. Jeremy Reynolds and Treasure crossed the finish line in Auburn at 10:52 p.m. Saturday to win the Tevis Cup, completing the 100-mile course from Truckee in 15 hours, 37 minutes. The victory marked Reynolds' sixth Tevis Cup title. Reynolds was the runner-up in last year's Tevis Cup, crossing the finish line hand in hand with his wife, Heather. Junior rider Tierney Beloberk's horse, CH Fancy Finesse, earned the Haggin Cup, awarded annually to the top-conditioned horse among the top-10 finishers following veterinary evaluations. The event tested competitors with high temperatures but still produced a strong finish rate. Of the 102 horse-and-rider teams that started, 51 completed the ride. "It was a tough ride; the heat made sure of that," outgoing ride director Chuck Stalley said in a news release. "Riders heeded the heat warnings and took good care of their equines. We are proud of them." Stalley, who directed the event for 15 years alongside his wife, Pam, received the Drucilla Barner Award during Sunday's awards ceremony in recognition of their longtime leadership and dedication to the ride. Among other notable accomplishments, Auburn's Hal Hall completed his 34th Tevis Cup, tying Barbara White's record for the most successful finishes. Jeremy Reynolds, Kristine Hartman and Karen Donley each earned 1,000-mile buckles for reaching 10 career Tevis completions. The ride also recognized 16 first-time finishers, while 800 volunteers supported competitors throughout the event.
