Teenage girl injured, rescued after jumping off Rainbow Bridge

A teenage girl was rescued Wednesday night after she jumped from the Rainbow Bridge into Lake Natoma and landed on her back, according to Folsom Fire officials. Rescue crews were dispatched to the scene shortly before 5 p.m. after a call came in that a teenager had jumped from the bridge and injured herself. The injured bridge jumper then became stranded on a rock. Brian Beck, assistant chief of training with the Folsom Fire Department, told the Folsom Telegraph that crews were able to respond and reach the girl within minutes with the use of a rescue boat. The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries but it is unknown at this time the extent of her injuries. Despite the presence of signs on the bridge warning people not to jump, fire officials say this is a yearly occurrence where someone jumps, becomes injured and requires rescue. Beck said these bridge jumps are so dangerous because a person can mistakenly hit rocks; often people also experience shock due to the coldness of the water. Officials say Rainbow Bridge was closed during the rescue but it reopened shortly after.
