Rocklin Police to host a DUI checkpoint Aug.21

The Rocklin Police Department announced it will conduct a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Checkpoint from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location within city limits on Friday, Aug. 21. California law requires law enforcement agencies to announce DUI checkpoints in advance. These checkpoints are designed to enhance public safety by educating the community and deterring impaired driving. DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving related crashes, police officials said. "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," Lt. Neil Costa said. "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety." The Rocklin Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal. Earlier this year, the Rocklin Police Department announced six drivers were cited during a DUI checkpoint. Two people were cited for driving on suspended licenses and four were cited for driving without a license at a DUI/DL checkpoint. That checkpoint resulted in 934 vehicles contacted total. Drivers charged with a first time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license and possible jail time. Police say that if you plan to drink, make arrangements ahead of time for a ride home. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare or taxi, or call trusted friends. Driving under the influence puts everyone on the road at risk. For more information regarding this week's upcoming checkpoint visit https://www.rocklin.ca.gov.
