CHP recovers 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle stolen 33 years ago

A routine vehicle identification number (VIN) verification at the California Highway Patrol Auburn Area office led to the recovery of a classic Chevrolet Chevelle reported stolen more than three decades ago. The 1971 Chevelle, bearing out-of-state registration, was brought to the CHP Auburn Area office by its new owner for a VIN verification. During the inspection, CHP personnel discovered irregularities with the vehicle's identification numbers and determined they had been altered. A follow-up investigation, with assistance from CHP investigators, revealed the Chevelle was reported stolen to the San Mateo Police Department 33 years ago. Investigators located the original owner, and after more than three decades, reunited them with the Chevelle. The individual who recently purchased the vehicle cooperated fully with the investigation and is not suspected of involvement in the original theft alteration of the vehicle's identification numbers. At this time, no suspects have been identified in connection with the original theft or VIN alteration, and investigators have not determined when or by whom the vehicle's identification numbers were altered.
