Unplug your chargers for safety

We're talking about lithium-ion batteries. Do you have an EV, hybrid, E-bike, power wall for solar, cell phone, laptop, tablet, rechargeable power tool or rechargeable toys? Please read on. Lithium-ion batteries are becoming more and more common in homes and with commercial vehicle fleets. While fires from these products are rare, they are becoming more common as more of us convert to these technologies. Fortunately, CAL FIRE and our local fire departments have been trained to respond, but there is still a lot the professionals don't know. There is ongoing study and education for our fire departments and other agencies. Here are some important facts. Lithium-ion fires cannot be extinguished – with water, suffocation, chemicals, fire extinguishers or anything else Once they seem to be out, they can reignite hours, days or even years later If you experience a lithium-ion fire, get out of the house or car immediately and get upwind of the fire Call 911 and let them know it's a lithium-ion fire Do not re-enter the home or vehicle until professionals give the okay Let the fire burn, and let the professionals take the lead Firefighters will prioritize protecting exposures from the source so it doesn't spread It is a medical emergency if you inhale the toxic gases or are exposed to ashes What can you do to prevent this? The main thing is to unplug all charging devices once they are charged. Do not leave cell phones and other devices plugged in overnight or longer than a full charge. What causes these fires? Overheating, crushing, penetration, overcharging, internal or external short, electrolyte leakage. What are the hazards? Smoke, fire, explosion, internal pressure, toxic gases, flammable gases, vapor clouds, flying debris that spreads the fire, one battery catches fire and spreads to other batteries nearby. Again, these fires are rare but potentially deadly or threatening. It's good to be aware of the risks and what to do if they occur.
