Centuries-old clay legacy reborn: Lincoln's historic Carnegie Library transformed into vibrant clay arts center

The historic 1909 Carnegie Library in downtown Lincoln is stepping into an inspiring new chapter as construction begins to transform the local landmark into the Lincoln Clay Arts Center (LCAC). The initiative represents a civic-cultural partnership between LCAC and the city of Lincoln. After serving the community for over a century — and sitting vacant for the past 15 years — the Carnegie Library is awakening as a fully-equipped creative hub. Designed to connect artists, educators, students and families, the center will bring hands-on art education and collaborative spaces directly to downtown Lincoln. "There's something incredibly special about preserving a piece of Lincoln's history while giving it a dynamic new purpose," said City Councilmember Whitney Eklund. "This is a major opportunity to unite our community through creativity and learning for generations to come. I can't wait to see the Carnegie filled with life once again." Honoring a Ceramic LegacyConstructed in 1909 through an Andrew Carnegie grant, Lincoln's first public library has long anchored the city's civic identity. Its architectural terra cotta, glazed brick and ceramic roof tiles showcase the craftsmanship of Gladding, McBean — Lincoln's historic clay products manufacturer founded in 1875. The Lincoln Clay Arts Center directly honors that legacy by offering: Affordable, fully equipped studio spaces for emerging and established ceramic artists. Hands-on clay classes and workshops tailored for beginner through advanced participants. Dynamic exhibition spaces, open studio nights, artist receptions, and community events. "Reactivating the Carnegie Library is about more than restoring brick and mortar," said David Riccitiello, LCAC Board Chair. "It is about creating a living space where people can learn, teach, exhibit and connect. With physical updates underway, our focus is now on building the programs and partnerships that will allow the Center to thrive for decades." Turning Vision into RealityA feasibility study completed by AMS Planning & Research in 2025 confirmed strong community demand and outlined a sustainable operating model. Subsequently, the city of Lincoln committed $275,000 for facility upgrades and equipment, supported by an additional $30,000 from founding private donors. Renovations include full ADA accessibility retrofits, updated restrooms, modernized flooring and lighting, and major electrical upgrades required to power high-capacity kilns. "This project represents a vital investment in both Lincoln's heritage and its future," said Lincoln City Manager Sean Scully. "Transforming the Carnegie Library into the Lincoln Clay Arts Center preserves a cherished piece of history while establishing a new downtown destination that energizes local businesses and cultural life." Building the Center's FutureWith structural renovations fully funded, LCAC has launched a fundraising campaign targeting three-year startup capital. These funds will support initial operations, outreach and programming while earned revenue streams — from studio rentals, workshops, gallery sales and memberships — fully mature. "Construction gets us to the front door," Riccitiello noted. "Our focus now is ensuring that when those doors open, a thriving, welcoming organization is waiting inside." The Lincoln Clay Arts Center is scheduled to officially open its doors in 2027.
