Roseville, Rocklin to observe 9/11

The city of Roseville invites community members to observe the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that claimed 2,977 lives. A visual memorial of 3,000 American flags will be on display from sunrise to sunset on Friday, Sept. 11, in Roseville's Vernon Town Square, 311 Vernon St. Residents are invited to walk among the flags and reflect and remember those whose lives were lost when members of the militant Islamist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airline flights, crashing them into the Pentagon and the twin World Trade Center towers. One of the planes, believed to be headed for the White House, crashed into a field in rural Pennsylvania when passengers tried to breach the cockpit and take back control of the airliner. Among the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day were 441 first responders, including 343 New York firefighters and 60 Port Authority and New York City police officers. According to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, the mass casualties represent the single largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil, and the greatest loss of emergency responders on a single day in American history. Rocklin The Rocklin Public Safety Foundation is hosting a free family event on Sunday, Sept. 13, to honor those who serve and in remembrance of those who lost their lives on 9/11. The Patriot Day event is noted as an opportunity to join neighbors, friends and business owners to express gratitude to "those who enrich our community with their very presence." According to the Rocklin Police Department, the day will also include the Rocklin Fire Department simulating a vehicle extrication rescue, a Placer County Sheriff's Office helicopter rescue demo, police K-9 and drone demos, food trucks, a kids zone and the opportunity to get kids fingerprinted for a child ID. Patriot Day will be from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Johnson Springview Park, 5480 5th Street in Rocklin. Loomis The Loomis American Legion Post 775 and Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a 9/11 Candle Light Ceremony in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Loomis Train Depot and will feature speeches by local dignataries. Residents are asked to bring a folding chair and join in remembering the lives lost on that tragic day.
