Placer Fire Station 71 in Auburn to host 9/11 rememberance

Placer County Fire Department Station 71 invites the community to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Placer County Supervisor Cindy Gustafson will kick off a line-up of speakers beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the fire station, 14041 Atwood Road in Auburn. Other speakers include Cal Fire/Placer County Fire Chief Jim Hudson, Placer County Sheriff's Office Acting Capt. David Smith, Placer County Assistant CEO Sean Rabe and Placer County Law Enforcement Chaplain Lane Dustin. A beam from one of the World Trade Center towers will be on display. Two-thousand, nine-hundred and seventy-seven lives were lost when members of the militant Islamist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airline flights, crashing them into the Pentagon and the twin World Trade Center towers. One of the planes, believed to be headed for the White House, crashed into a field in rural Pennsylvania when passengers tried to breach the cockpit and take back control of the airliner. Among the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day were 441 first responders, including 343 New York firefighters and 60 Port Authority and New York City police officers. According to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, the mass casualties represent the single largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil, and the greatest loss of emergency responders on a single day in American history.
