Comments on Mailey's Aug. 5 letter

Tom's recent support of wake generating boats (Aug. 5 edition of the Auburn Journal, page A8) hints at his fishing offshore for trout and salmon. However, others recreate near shore (kayaks, paddle boards, bass and bluegill fisherfolk) where deep waves generated by wake boats, having quickly dampened off behind the boat, resurrect as deep and steep shore breaks. These are sneaky and dangerous waves. Just watch kids fishing for bluegill being knocked about. Kayak mayhem. Watch a fishing pole tossed overboard (true story!). While bass fishing I slow down and give a wide berth to the shore-huggers, but this is antithetical to wakeboarding and is therefore not practical. Maybe the only solution to this hazard is to cordon off some stretches of lakeshore for fishing and slowing down the wake boats offshore from the zones. Slotted times? It seems like every solution to this real problem discourages some other valid recreation. "Use At Your Own Risk" signs at the boat ramps? Of course. Harry Hickman Auburn
