Valley Christian football falls to Millenium, 38-12

Valley Christian opened up its football season Thursday night and suffered a 38-12 loss to Millenium. The score tells it all. Valley Christian scored two touchdowns, but couldn't keep pace with Millenium. Dominic Eyster scored both touchdowns; one on a pass from Josh Becker and another on a kickoff return for a touchdown. Millennium improved to 2-0 with the win, while it was Valley Christian's first game of the season. "We struggled to execute consistently," Valley Christian coach Doug Williams said. "We were able to move the ball a little bit, had it in the red zone a few times, but couldn't punch it in. Things weren't as crisp as I thought we'd be." Williams expected a better performance. In 2023, Valley Christian defeated Millenium in 11-man football, 49-0. "They were big and strong," Williams said. "They lined up their defensive ends really wide and it was effective. Their linebackers could tackle and their secondary could cover." Despite giving up 38 points, Williams felt his defense played pretty well. He said the defense made some errors, but he believes they're fixable. "If we get more reps, I think the errors will take care of themselves," Williams said. "We ask a lot of our defense, and I think they'll get it dialed in with more reps." Despite the loss, Williams is optimistic moving forward. "They're not professional athletes," Williams said. "We do a good job of working hard, but I think the boys could work harder outside of practice and be sharper on stuff that the coaching staff is asking for. They took the challenge and will get better." School starts next week, and Williams said he thinks that will help the kids with their time management. "We're physically deeper than we've ever been," Williams said of his team. "We've got all the ingredients. I don't know what happened. Sometimes we don't play well after long bus rides and this game was in Tracy. We played on a Thursday and not a Saturday. We played on a girls' flag football field instead of a regular football field. I don't know. We will be fine and are ready for practice on Tuesday."
