Bear River blasts Orland behind record performance

Bear River pulled away from Orland in the second half Friday night in Lake of the Pines, turning a close game into a 40-19 victory behind a record-setting performance from Jaeden Waters. Waters finished with a school-record 291 yards and five touchdowns, while quarterback Jayden Brock and the Bruins' offensive and defensive lines also played key roles in the win. "The offensive and defensive lines also had great games as a group," Bear River coach Dustin Smith said. "Jayden Brock had an awesome game as well and really helped set the tone and lead us." The Bruins broke the game open with a pair of big plays from Waters in the second half. Brock connected with Waters for a 27-yard touchdown late in the third quarter to give Bear River a 26-13 lead. Waters followed with a 66-yard touchdown run on Bear River's next possession, extending the advantage to 33-13 heading into the fourth quarter. Orland had an opportunity to cut into the deficit early in the final period, driving to Bear River's 4-yard line. But the Bruins' defense came up with a stop, forcing a turnover on downs. Waters then put the game away. Starting from their own 5-yard line, Waters broke loose for an 89-yard touchdown run to push Bear River's lead to 40-13. Orland added a late 9-yard touchdown run, but Bear River closed out the 40-19 victory. Waters accounted for three of his five touchdowns in the second half, including touchdown runs of 66 and 89 yards and a 27-yard touchdown reception from Brock. Bear River (2-0) will be at home Friday night against Union Mine.
