Folsom Fire Engine 39 returning to service

A Folsom fire engine that was placed out of service due to budget cuts has returned; fire officials say the reemergence of Engine 39 will fill a huge need in the city. Engine 39 was reinstated on Sunday, Sept. 6; Folsom fire officials say this brings essential emergency response capabilities back to the city of Folsom, specifically strengthening coverage across the Empire Ranch area on the city's east side. Last fall, Engine 39 was "browned out" or taken out of service, as city leaders were forced to make budget cuts. But in August, officials approved a plan to move forward with a new staffing model in the Folsom Fire Department, which led to the ability to reactivate Engine 39. As part of that new staffing model, the Folsom Fire Department launched its inaugural Single-Role EMT and Paramedic Program. After a recruitment effort, fire officials say 14 single-role members have now joined the department and will begin staffing two of Folsom's three primary transport ambulances starting Sunday. Folsom Fire Chief Jason Solak said this new staffing model builds operational depth, streamlines long-term recruitment and establishes a more reliable, cost-effective baseline for daily staffing levels. "Putting Engine 39 back in service is a win for our community that enhances our ability of timely, reliable emergency response for the residents and visitors of Folsom," said Solak. "Our new single-role program gives us the flexibility and operational depth we need to stay resilient. It allows us to recruit efficiently, manage personnel costs and optimize our daily operations — all while keeping fiscal responsibility to our taxpayers at the forefront." Engine 39 will operate out of Station 39, staffed daily with a three-person crew providing immediate Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedic care and critical fire suppression services. The crew will also cross-staff a Type 3 wildland fire engine to address wildland fire threats. Additionally, Station 39 will continue to house Medic 39, which will now be staffed by a single-role EMT and single-role Paramedic team.
