West Park rebounds for win over Vacaville, 28-14

After a dreadful week one, West Park's football team played much better in a 28-14 win over Vacaville on Friday night. The defense played lights out, as the offense missed on a screen play that allowed Vacaville to intercept the ball and take it all the way down to the one-yard line and score on the next play. The second touchdown came against the team's reserves. Offensively, the line gave quarterback Drew Browning more time to throw than they did a week ago and Browning had much better success, as the offense did as a whole, accounting for three of the team's four touchdowns. "We went on the road in a tough environment and the kids played well," West Park coach Jason Tenner said. "We're young in a lot of key areas and last week it was too fast for some kids. We had four chances to score inside the red zone and came up empty. The focus this week was to finish, protect the football and play with discipline." Browning completed 19-of-31 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns against one interception, and also rushed for 89 yards and scored a rushing touchdown on West Park's first possession to put them on top, 7-0. His main target throughout the game was Isaiah King, who caught six passes for 108 yards. "Our quarterback needed to play better this week and he did," Tenner said. "He played with confidence and he ran the ball really well. He made a lot of third-down conversions and hit a lot of different receivers. The offense ran well." The Panthers took a 14-0 lead in the second quarter when Browning hooked up with Devin Trigo for an eight-yard touchdown pass in which Trigo made what Tenner called the best catch in West Park history, a one-handed grab that gave his team a two-score lead. Vacaville made it 14-7 before half, but that's as close as the score would come, as West Park scored the next two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Browning hit Aaydon Gallaway for a five-yard touchdown catch before Mason McLean had a 50-yard pick-six, as the Panthers had their second pick-six in as many games. "Credit goes to the offensive line," Tenner said. "We're young there, but we made some adjustments. Junior left guard Christian Vincent played nasty and then we moved Jake Beardslee to right guard and I was happy with how he played too. "Defensively, we were lights out. Neaman Miller was wrecking havoc at nose guard. Jesiah Brewer was back and middle linebacker and played with explosiveness and out ends Tristan Esquivel and Griffin Bevans were solid." West Park plays its first home game of the season on Friday night when they host crosstown rival Roseville (2-0).
