Granite Bay makes it look easy again with 55-21 win over Cosumnes Oaks

Through two weeks Granite Bay is looking even better than last year's Sac-Joaquin Section finalist team of Grizzlies. After throttling Vista del Lago week one, 47-16, the Grizzlies ripped Cosumnes Oaks, 55-21, on Friday night to improve to 2-0, scoring 102 points in the two games. The Grizzlies led 35-0 at halftime on its way to a big win. "Obviously, leading 35-0 at halftime, we played pretty well on both sides of the ball in the first half," Granite Bay coach Joe Cattolico said. "They were pretty similar games in that sense. We were still pretty good on offense in the second half, but not as good on defense Offensively, the Grizzlies were able to move the ball particularly well on the ground, averaging just under eight yards a carry. Gabe Smyth had a big game with 143 yards and two touchdowns on only 15 carries. Dylan Tetz gained 65 yards on the ground, while Josh Wiederhold picked up 67 yards and scored two touchdowns, as the Grizzlies had three players gain at least 65 yards rushing. Through the air, Dominic Cattolico completed 15-of-21 passes for 211 yards and four touchdowns. Freshman Trey Johnson caught five passes for 61 yards and two scores. Tetz and Zion Vaea also caught touchdown passes. "We had good balance on offense, as we ran for 300-some yards and passed for 200-some," Cattolico said. "Cosumnes Oaks is building a team and they've got some good athletes that are tough to defend, but our defense did a good job, particularly in the first half." Cattolico is happy to have two wins behind him, but he knows things are not going to get any easier. "We've played two good games, but obviously there aren't a lot of teams losing games in the SFL," Cattolico said. "We've got a good mix of guys in all four grades playing for us and they're supporting each other, as we're trying to put the pieces together. We've got three freshmen who play and some sophomores, but it's been good. The guys have done a good job. I like the direction we're headed." The Grizzlies have a bye this week before they hit the road for the first time this season when they head to Ponderosa on Sept. 18.
