Coyote sightings reported in Rocklin open spaces

As summer comes to an end, the Rocklin Police Department is warning residents of coyotes making a public appearance with most reports being in the Sunset Whitney Recreation Area and various locations around town. Coyote sightings are more common in the open green spaces in Rocklin and these adaptable animals are permanent residents in our area. While coyotes are naturally cautious around people, they can become less fearful when they find an easy source of food, water and shelter. In order to prevent coyotes on your property and reduce the amount of encounters around your home keep your pets in sight and leashed when walking especially in open spaces, bring your pets indoors at night and avoid leaving pet food outside, secure small livestock, never feed or attempt to tame a coyote, keep all outdoor garbage in tightly secured containers, remove accessible sources of standing water, pick up fallen fruit from trees and avoid bird feeders which can attract birds, rodents and other small prey. Coyotes are the most active during dawn and dusk, however, it is not unusual to see or hear them during daylight hours. If you encounter a coyote, give it plenty of space and do not approach it. Make yourself appear large, make noise, and calmly move away to help reinforce the coyote's natural fear of humans.
