Ferry's three touchdowns lead Vista to 32-6 win

Brooke Ferry had herself a football game on Wednesday. The sophomore scored three of her team's five touchdowns, picked off two passes and returned one for a score in Vista's 32-6 win over Rio Americano. It was the Eagles' second straight win after losing to Granite Bay on Aug. 31. It wasn't a perfect game by the Eagles, but it was a win nonetheless. "We made some mistakes on both defense and offense that we generally don't make," Vista coach Jason Navarre said. "The good part about it was when the girls made a mistake, they knew it when it happened. Simple things like receivers not finishing routes. They're young athletes; they're not going to be perfect. But again, that's on us coaches. We've got to coach them up and make sure they understand what they need to do so those things don't happen." Ferry scored on the team's first possession, as she took a pass from Taylor Lemos and utilized her speed to run by defenders and get into the end zone. Ferry scored on Vista's second possession as well, this time on a run, as Vista opened up a 13-0 lead after one quarter. Vista's third score came on special teams, as Mari Waiters scored just before the half after a punt return for a touchdown. Waiters gave the Eagles a 20-0 halftime lead. Rio Americano cut the lead to 20-6, but Vista scored two late fourth-quarter touchdowns to open the game up. Lemos scored on a run, before Ferry intercepted a pass and returned it for her third touchdown of the game. Ferry led the defense with two interceptions, while Serene Dhaliwal also picked off a pass for the Eagles. The Eagles have won three of four games since opening the season with the loss to St. Francis. "Things are going good," Navarre said. "We've had some really good practices and we've had some good games. We played a tough team in Granite Bay, but the girls have really stepped up, worked hard in practice, and they've improved. We're seeing little improvements every week, which is what we want. We don't expect them to go from good to great overnight." Vista plays three games on Saturday before a big game on the road on Monday at Christian Brothers. "The Granite Bay game was good because it's good to play good competition," Navarre said. "That makes us better. Monday's game against Christian Brothers is a big game for us. They're a good team with a bunch of good athletes with a lot of speed."
