Del Oro rolls past Vanden, improves to 4-0

Del Oro High School's football team continued its unbeaten start to the season Friday night, pulling away from Vanden for a 41-20 victory in Loomis. Once again the offense started quickly as the Golden Eagles scored 20 points in the first quarter and added 14 more in the second to take a 34-12 lead into halftime before both teams were held scoreless in the third. That marked the third time this season that Del Oro has scored 14 or more points in the opening frame. Junior quarterback Grayson Haugen led Del Oro's passing attack, completing 15 of 24 attempts for 259 yards and three touchdowns. Haugen has been nothing short of efficient this season, completing over 70 % of his passes with nine touchdowns and no interception. Two of Friday's touchdowns went to junior Chase Carmazzi, who finished with four catches for 96 yards. Senior Landen Parry also caught four passes for 67 yards and a touchdown, while senior Brennen Gibbs added four catches for 61 yards. Gibbs provided a spark on the ground as well, carrying 16 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns. He finished with 136 all-purpose yards. Del Oro's defense also came up with several big plays. Parry led the Golden Eagles with 10 tackles and recorded an interception, while senior Reid Elam had nine tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack. Senior Ty Sauve added five tackles and three sacks. Vanden scored twice in the first half and added a touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter, but Del Oro's early offensive surge proved too much to overcome. The Golden Eagles improved to 4-0 with the victory and will open Sierra Foothill League play this week against a familiar face: former head coach Casey Taylor and the Oak Ridge Trojans in El Dorado Hills.
