Auburn Area Democratic Club to feature insurance commissioner candidate, proposition overview

The Auburn Area Democratic Club (AADC) will hold a meeting on Thursday, Oct.1 that will include a Zoom presentation and Q&A with Insurance Commissioner Candidate Ben Allen. The meeting will also feature presentations by the League of Women Voters (LWV) about the 14 Propositions on our November ballot. Candidates for school boards, Auburn City Council, California Assembly and California Senate will meet and greet attendees from 5:45-6:30 p.m., leading up to the formal meeting. As part of AADC's continuing work to educate the public about candidates and propositions on the Nov. 3 ballot, this meeting is designed to provide information so that everyone can confidently vote the entire ballot. In fact, it could be argued that local candidates impact our daily lives even more than federal candidates. School boards, for example, have a profound effect on the character and mission of discourse in our neighborhoods. Five candidates for local school boards, one candidate for Sierra College, two candidates for Auburn City Council, a candidate for California Assembly and a candidate for California Senate will all be present to talk about their priorities. This gathering will be an opportunity to hear from the people who want to represent the Auburn area. The keynote speaker, Ben Allen, will join by Zoom to talk about his plans to solve the problem of wildfire-driven home insurance rates. Given the growing wildfire risk, insurance companies have won approval to raise homeowner premiums and drop policyholders in fire-prone areas. The question is: Can California fix the private market, or should it step in with its own coverage? To learn more, visit benallenca.com. Next on the agenda will be a presentation from LWV members who have studied the pros and cons of California's 14 Propositions. They will sort out the differences between the propositions and explain them in clear language. The LWV is famous for its work to empower voters and encourage democracy. The AADC monthly membership meeting is open to the public, and it will be in the Rose Room in City Hall, 1225 Lincoln Way in Auburn, from 6:30-8 p.m., with socializing and pizza from 5:45 – 6:30. The suggested donation for pizza and a soda is $5 or two pieces of pizza for $9.
