Lincoln Regional Airport expansion begins with new hangar development

Construction of a new hangar development is underway at the Lincoln Regional Airport. Ed Soo, owner of Executive Hangars of Lincoln LLC, is overseeing the $22 million project that will add new aircraft storage facilities at the airport, addressing growing demand for hangar space within the Sacramento region. Project Full Throttle involves construction of 66 private hangars across 18 acres, including 16 T-Hangars, 30 Executive Hangars, a large 50,000 square-foot hangar for Jessup University's flight school, a maintenance shop, and future jet accommodations, according to Lincolnhangars.com The project is being completed in multiple phases. The first phase began Sept. 24 and involves laying 6,000 tons of asphalt that will serve as the foundation for the aircraft hangars. The next phase is construction of the new hangars, intended to take advantage of demand for private aircraft storage as available hangar space has become increasingly limited at airports throughout the region, according to the City of Lincoln. The new facilities are designed to accommodate a range of aircraft, including piston aircraft, turboprops and light- to mid-sized jets, according to Lincolnhangars.com Soo, a member of the Lincoln chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, has been involved in discussions with the city and airport community throughout the planning process. A Lincoln City Council meeting held in August 2025 brought together representatives from the city, Soo and Western Engineering Contractors to discuss a construction timeline. Completion of the hangars is expected sometime next spring. Project Full Throttle comes as Lincoln Regional Airport continues to position itself for aviation-related growth. City planning documents have pointed to the airport's potential economic benefits, including employment opportunities. The city-owned airport encompasses 775 acres and currently has a 6,001-foot-long paved runway, 20 acres of ramp space, 207 aircraft hangars and 10 aviation service businesses, according to the city of Lincoln. The airfield was constructed in 1942 by the U.S. Army Air Corps to serve as an auxiliary training field for B-25 bombers during World War II. At the time, the airfield was known as Lincoln Auxiliary Field - Mather Flying School. The hangar development is one of several planned airport improvement projects. The city is preparing for the eventual reconstruction of the airport's only runway, Runway 15-33, a project estimated to cost $12 million. Improvements include reconstructing the runway, regrading all safety areas, installing new runway lights and guidance signs, improving precision approach indicators and making related taxiway and service road safety improvements. State aviation planning documents mention that future airport projects at the airport including reconstruction of various taxiways and total rehabilitation of Flightline Drive, on which the airport is located. The series of improvements represents another step in the airport's ongoing transformation from a general aviation facility into a larger aviation hub serving Lincoln and the surrounding region.
