Placer Sheriff's K-9 shot in leg by armed, barricaded suspect

Placer County Sheriff's Office K-9 Sonic was shot just after 7 a.m. Friday by an armed woman who was barricaded inside a home on Quarry Lane in Penryn. The Sheriff's Office confirmed Sonic was rushed to a veterinary hospital for treatment. Placer detectives attempted to serve an arrest warrant Thursday evening for resisting/obstructing an officer and an eviction order signed on 30-year-old Linda Mullennix. According to the Sheriff's Office, Mullennix also had a history of threatening neighbors, was known to be in possession of a firearm and has been the subject of multiple calls for service. "Due to her known history, we attempted to contact and negotiate a peaceful resolution with her outside," the Sheriff's Office shared Friday morning. The Sheriff's Office confirmed Mullennix ran inside when a detective tried to speak with her, and she pointed a gun at the detective from a window inside the home, threatening to shoot him. Mullennix then barricaded herself in the home and refused to come out. Several deputies attempted to get Mullennix to surrender, and the Sheriff's Special Enforcement Team arrived with members of the Crisis Negotiation Team just after midnight. Officials report the teams spent several hours attempting to get Mullennix to come out and surrender. Tactics attempted included the use of interior drones, contact through the crisis negotiation team via cell phone and a throw-phone, tear gas, non-lethal 40mm rounds and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office Rook. "Mullennix destroyed multiple law enforcement drones throughout the night," the Placer Sheriff's Office reported. According to the Sheriff's Office, Mullennix was confirmed to be hiding in the fridge and the Special Enforcement team moved into the house in an attempt to call her out. K-9 Sonic was deployed as Mullennix opened the fridge. Mullennix shot K-9 Sonic and deputies returned fire, striking Mullennix. According to the Sheriff's Office, Mullennix has been transported to the hospital and reported to be in stable condition. The Sheriff's Office confirmed it is now following deputy-involved shooting protocols in conjunction with the Placer County District Attorney's Office. "We ask our community to join us in praying for our K-9 office and his handler," the Sheriff's Office stated. "He is in excellent hands at Loomis Basin Veterinary. He was hit in the leg and is expected to recover."
