Kevin Kiley's District Office reopens after hazmat scare last week

U.S. Rep. Kevin Kiley's district office in Rocklin reopened for business as usual Monday morning after closing early the previous Friday due to a hazardous materials scare. At around noon on Oct. 17, a staff member discovered an envelope containing a suspicious, unidentified white powdery substance while opening mail. The staffer immediately placed the material into a special quarantine enclosure and called 911. Officers from the Rocklin Police Department responded to the Congressman's office and worked with staff to secure the area and ensure the safety of those present. The Roseville Fire Hazmat Task Force and FBI responded to assess the substance and assist with the response. The FBI collected the powdery product and took the lead in the investigation. No illnesses or injuries were reported following the incident. "Public safety remains our highest priority and we will continue to support the investigation as needed," the Rocklin Police Department said in a statement issued Friday. Kiley's office reopened at 9 a.m. Monday morning. The representative's Chief of Staff, Bob Holste, said Hazmat officials told him the office had been decontaminated but he had received no word from the FBI about what the substance was. "On behalf of my entire team, I want to express our gratitude to the Rocklin Police Department and Roseville Hazmat team as well as the FBI for their quick action and response," Kiley said in the media statement. "No one should have to worry for their safety simply because they go to work for the American people. This incident highlights once again why we need to bring down the temperature in our politics and embrace a return to civility and commonsense. In the meantime we will not be deterred or intimidated from doing the job we were elected to do." Holste said inquiries can be directed to him at 202-731-3614.
