Del Oro blasts Whintey 46-14

Del Oro delivered a resounding statement in Rocklin Friday night, overwhelming Whitney 46-14 behind a prolific passing performance from junior quarterback Luke Taber and a defense that kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard through the first half. The Golden Eagles scored 23 points in the second quarter to seize control, then added another 14 in the third to turn a competitive opening period into a rout. The Golden Eagles improved to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in Sierra Foothill League play, strengthening their position in the Division II rankings heading into the final week of the regular season. Taber was at the center of the offensive explosion, completing 16 of 19 passes for 259 yards and five touchdowns. He spread the ball around, connecting with five different receivers while finding the end zone with four of them. Chase Carmazzi was a particularly dangerous target, hauling in four passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Landen Parry added three catches for 40 yards and two scores, while Gavin Wood turned two receptions into 71 yards and another touchdown. Brennen Gibbs gave Del Oro a complementary threat on the ground, piling up 119 yards on 15 carries. He also caught six passes for 54 yards, finishing with 173 yards from scrimmage. The Golden Eagles didn't need long to establish control. After opening the scoring with a touchdown in the first quarter, they exploded for 23 points in the second while keeping Whitney's offense bottled up. That defensive effort was just as impressive as the offensive production. Whitney quarterback Easton Tarble completed 22 of 39 passes for 281 yards, but the Wildcats managed only one passing touchdown. They were held to 84 rushing yards and didn't find the end zone until the third quarter. Del Oro's defense recorded three sacks, with Jaxen Wright leading the way with 1.5. Liam Brunton added another sack, while Drew Bundy broke up three passes. Whitney finally got on the board in the third quarter, but by then the damage had been done. The Wildcats added another touchdown in the fourth, but Del Oro had already built an insurmountable advantage. The ground game provided another layer to the attack. Gibbs averaged nearly 8 yards per carry, while Sam Lawrence added 28 yards on three attempts and Taber chipped in 28 more. Del Oro's defense made sure Whitney never found an offensive rhythm early. The Golden Eagles finished with seven tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles and a blocked field goal. Logan Kiernan, Drew Bundy and Cooper Carmazzi helped lead a defensive effort that consistently disrupted the Wildcats. Whitney was able to move the ball well but the Wildcats struggled to turn those yards into points. Logan Miller caught the team's lone passing touchdown, finishing with three receptions for 42 yards. Cash Stevens led Whitney with 59 rushing yards, while Landon Tarble contributed 75 all-purpose yards. Del Oro will wrap up the regular season Friday night against Rocklin (6-3, 3-2 SFL) in a rivalry clash that will help determine the top seed in Division II. Whitney (6-3, 2-3 SFL) will wrap up the regular season against Oak Ridge (6-3, 4-1 SFL).
