Del Oro takes down Rocklin, captures Battle for the Shield and top seed in D2

The Battle for the Shield has become one of Placer County's marquee high school football rivalries, and Friday night delivered another memorable chapter. With the top seed in Division II on the line, Del Oro turned in a statement performance against rival Rocklin, pulling away for a 41-24 victory to capture the Battle for the Shield and strengthen its case as the section's team to beat. The Golden Eagles (8-2, 4-2 Sierra Foothill League) entered the matchup ranked No. 1 in Division II, with Rocklin (7-3, 3-3) right behind them at No. 2. Del Oro left little doubt about its standing, using a relentless offensive attack and a pair of explosive special teams plays to put away the Thunder and position itself for the top playoff seed. Running back Brennan Gibbs powered the Golden Eagles with three rushing touchdowns, while quarterback Luke Taber continued to flourish since taking over the starting role midway through the season. Taber connected with Chase Carmazzi and Gavin Wood for touchdowns, and Brandon Alfonso delivered perhaps the night's biggest play with a 90-yard kickoff return to slam the door shut on a late push by Rocklin. For a program that went 2-8 just two seasons ago, the victory represented another significant milestone in its climb back to the top of the Sac-Joaquin Section. "That work in the dark," Del Oro coach Josh Parry said of what has fueled the turnaround. "It means how much they sacrificed. It means looking in the mirror, saying what we need to do. We need to be in the weight room. We need to be at camps. We need to be lifting, conditioning, watching the film. We need to be doing those things, and these guys bought in." Del Oro wasted little time taking control, jumping ahead 6-0 in the opening quarter before Rocklin cut the deficit in half on a 21-yard field goal with 2:32 remaining. The Golden Eagles kept their foot on the gas in the second. Luke Taber bought time with his legs before finding Chase Carmazzi in the back of the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown, stretching the lead to 13-3. Rocklin punched back behind Parker Lively, who dragged several Del Oro defenders into the end zone on a bruising 22-yard touchdown run. But the Golden Eagles had an answer, as Brennan Gibbs scored from 3 yards out with 3:06 left in the half to restore a 10-point cushion. Del Oro threatened to add to its lead before the break, but a promising drive unraveled under a barrage of holding penalties, including one that wiped out a 24-yard touchdown pass. The Golden Eagles eventually punted, settling for a 20-10 halftime advantage. Neither offense found much rhythm coming out of the locker room. Rocklin went three-and-out on its opening possession, while Del Oro squandered its next opportunity with a turnover on downs at the Thunder 39, but the Golden Eagles didn't stay quiet for long. Taber found Wood for a touchdown with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter, pushing the advantage to 27-10 and giving Del Oro some breathing room heading into the final period. Rocklin made another push early in the fourth, as Lively connected with CJ Taylor for a 5-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 27-16 with 10:51 remaining. Any momentum the Thunder had gained disappeared on the ensuing kickoff, as Alfonso fielded the ball and raced 90 yards for a touchdown to deliver an immediate response and push the Golden Eagles' lead back to 34-17. Both teams traded touchdowns once more but the deficit was too much for the Thunder to overcome. For Parry, the performance was another indication of what his team is capable of, although he believes the Golden Eagles still have another gear. "Being aggressive," Parry said when asked what allowed Del Oro to attack one of the section's top defenses. He credited offensive coordinator Marco Baldacchino and the coaching staff for putting players in position to succeed, along with the team's understanding of its assignments and offensive system. "We still haven't played our best ball," Parry said. "That's what's exciting as a coach. I told them I coach them hard. I'm going to be hard on them because I don't even think we've played our best yet." Penalties remain an area of concern, particularly with the postseason approaching, but the Golden Eagles have continued to find ways to produce against some of the section's toughest competition. Taber has been a major part of that success since stepping into the starting quarterback role midway through the season after sitting the first five games due to transfer rules. The transition has been smooth for the junior, who said returning to the field has been an experience he's embraced. "I was excited to be back," Taber said. "Just being able to play again was great, and just got that feeling stepping back on the turf was amazing." Taber has also embraced the responsibility of leading a program with a long football tradition, particularly as the Golden Eagles make their push toward a championship. "My job as a quarterback is being a leader, and that's my responsibility," he said. "So doing what I can best is just great to do that for the team, and I'm so thankful to be able to do that." The connection between Taber and Carmazzi was particularly evident Friday, with the quarterback praising his receiver's ability to find openings against a Rocklin defense determined to slow down the passing game. Taber also believes the performance sends a message to the rest of the section. "I think people are starting to figure out how good we are," he said. "I think people are starting to figure out that they've got to play Del Oro." Parry has seen the program's resurgence from the sidelines and knows how much the opportunity means to those who have helped build its tradition. He pointed to the former players who have returned to support the current group, a reminder of the history the Golden Eagles are now carrying forward. "It's exciting to see the guys that came before them," Parry said. "It's special because it's a special place. Small town is a family, you know, and everybody knows each other and roots for each other." He also had plenty of praise for Gibbs, whose three-touchdown performance was another example of the versatility and leadership he brings to the team. "Just a special player," Parry said. "He loves his teammates, loves the system, loves his coaches. Just a dynamic player. Can do it all. Can catch. Can run. Can block. Play defense. Play corner. He's just a pleasure to coach." The victory gives Del Oro the Battle for the Shield and puts the Golden Eagles in position to enter the Division II playoffs as the No. 1 seed. The Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs begin next week with brackets scheduled to be released Sunday afternoon.
