Bad start for Oakmont girls in CVC opener

Oakmont High School's Capital Valley Conference girls basketball opener was a bust – a 22-point blowout at the hands of visiting Rio Linda on Friday night.The Vikings (13-5) trailed 12-4 after one quarter and 29-9 at halftime in a 56-34 loss to the Knights."We did not play defense. We let them drive the lane; we let them control the paint," Oakmont coach Al Voigt said. "We didn't adjust, we didn't take care of the ball, and we were sloppy."The Vikings cut the deficit to 40-25 after three periods. One major factor was the containment of Rio Linda's leading scorer, Marlesha Ayers. After scoring nine points in the first quarter, she wasn't allowed a shot until 3:42 remained in the third."We came out with a little bit of intensity, and we took care of the ball," Voigt said.Ayers led all scorers with 19 points. Paulette Williams scored 14 for the Knights.Shelby Kelch had 10 points for the Vikings."Offensive rebounding and controlling the paint is something you have to want to do," Voigt said. "You have to fight for space, fight for position, and you have to want it. They wanted it a lot more than us."Rio Linda (13-5) also defeated Oakmont 48-39 earlier this season."I'm going to enjoy this league," Rio Linda coach Jerry Huffhines said. "It's a tougher league. ... There are six good teams in this league."Antelope 56, Granite Bay 40 – Maria Dela Cruz scored 12 points, but the Grizzlies (0-16) lost to the Titans in the first game of the Common Good Classic on Saturday.Varsity boysRoseville 67, Nevada Union 53 – The Tigers (9-9) used a 22-7 fourth quarter to pull away from the Miners in an SFL opener. Daniel Rios led Roseville with 14 points. Trey Rosenberg scored 12 points, Cole Jacobs 11 and Nick Blaser 10."It was a good step for us, as far as working hard and getting better every day," Tigers coach Greg Granucci said.Pink Zone at WoodcreekWoodcreek will play host to Granite Bay in a Pink Zone game Friday. The freshman game tips off at 4 p.m., followed by the JV game at 5:30 and the varsity game at 7. There will be raffle and door prizes.Woodcreek has hosted a Pink Zone game since 2008 and has raised more than $6,000 toward Breast Cancer Awareness. Proceeds from Woodcreek's game benefit the Placer Breast Cancer Endowment and the Kay Yow Foundation.
