Woodcreek blasts Roseville, shares SFL title with Granite Bay

The first-place team battled the last-place team in a predictable outcome Friday night. Woodcreek High School blew right through crosstown rival Roseville on its way to a Sierra Foothill League co-championship, which it will share with Granite Bay.The final score was 86-50, and a running clock was used in the final quarter. The Timberwolves (22-4, 9-1 SFL) started with a 16-0 run in the first quarter and finished the first period on top 29-8. Woodcreek used mass subs in the second quarter, but the starters were back in the third to fire off six three-pointers, three off the hands of sophomore Tyler Milani.The accomplishments for the Timberwolves go beyond a league title. The senior class of Jamie Geyer, Sam Anderson, Devin Murphy, Demare Williams, John Peska, Quinn Morse, Derrick Kimball and Jake Haakenson won their 100th game, beginning with their freshman season."The key to our success is just knowing each other and just knowing everyone's skill set, where everyone's going to be," Geyer said. "We've been playing together since seventh grade. It's just chemistry."Coach Paul Hayes had the opportunity to coach the class at the junior varsity level as well. They've won a league title every year, including last season's Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship."The key for these guys has been relentless effort – the desire to win," Hayes said. "It shows in practice, too. We have some battles in practice that they translate out here onto the court. Oftentimes, it's even lighter in the game just because of the competition in practice."The performances on offense came from all over the court. Devin Murphy registered his usual rounded performance, scoring six points and dishing out five assists. Geyer and Anderson had four assists each, leading to 20 assists for the team. Milani, Peska and Geyer each scored in double figures, Milani leading with 17 points.The Timberwolves were just as staggering on defense. In the first quarter, Murphy collected four of his team-high five steals, getting right up in the face of opposing point guard Nick Blaser and cutting down passing lanes. Anderson held Roseville center Andrew Schmidt to zero points.Trey Rosenberg led Roseville (9-18, 1-9 SFL) with 12 points and seven rebounds. The future is still bright. Sophomores Marcus Garcia, Daniel Rios and Cole Jacobs combined for 20 points.Woodcreek also got the opportunity to put its bench players on display, and 33 points came from non-starters."From a coaching standpoint, that's the one thing you always try to do, get them to play at a hundred percent intensity," Hayes said. "But it's really easy with this group, because they do it.
