Hwy. 65 attracted a wide range of musicians and performers to open mic.John Bush filled in for usual host Billy Buckman, who was on vacation.In addition to his duties as host, John accompanied many performers on harmonica.Musical selections included the sounds of Patsy Cline sung by Patti Lohden and Eula Storvs who also treated the crowd to a Pointer Sisters' favorite "Fire" plus song stylings by Mike and Carol Percy.Also on hand were Mike Sizemore, Gary Sloane, Will Morebeck, Kevin Matthiessen and Dave Lightfoot .Rounding out the evening's entertainment were singer-songwriter Becca Danielsen (beccadanielsen.com) who also sang an original composition backed by singer-songwriter Ken Koenig (kenkoenig.com) on guitar and John Bush on harmonica."Open Mike" gets underway at 6 PM every Sunday on Beach Hut Deli's outdoor patio.Thursday evenings look for featured performers.There is no admission charge, no cover charge and no minimum.Just in from Jeeves ...Jeeves learned that Lincoln Hills Players has mounted a new production called "Radio Hour."Their production features re-enactments of old radio shows.Performances start Wednesday and continue through Saturday, Aug. 6.Jeeves would like to attend.Alas, dogs are not allowed in Kilaga Springs' Presentation Hall.Recently, Jeeves watched "Radio Days," which also concerned old radio shows.This version was a movie by Woody Allen.Jeeves is a big fan of Woody Allen movies, especially "Radio Days."He would like to see Allen's latest film, "Midnight in Paris."Alas, dogs are not allowed in movie theaters.So Jeeves will have to wait until this movie comes out on DVD.Then, he can watch it in the comfort of his living room over a bowl of bones.Jeeves has learned that Allen's latest film features a protagonist who is transported back in time.While there, he meets famous writers and composers such Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and Cole Porter.Jeeves wishes that these artists could be transported forward in time so that he could have the chance to meet them.In particular, he would like to meet Gertrude Stein.Although she spent most of her life in Paris, Jeeves discovered that Stein was born in Allegheny, Pa. in 1874 but lived in Oakland from 1878 until 1891.About Oakland, she said, "There's no there, there."If Stein could be transported forward in time, Jeeves would invite her to Lincoln.He is certain that she would enjoy sitting around the fountain in Beermann Plaza.Jeeves would introduce her to the Downtown Dogs.They would be impressed - tails would wag.He is also certain that she would enjoy visiting the Carnegie Library and Lincoln Area Archives Museum.She might enjoy playing a round of golf at Sun City Lincoln Hills or Turkey Creek.Jeeves could caddie for her.He loves chasing balls.Jeeves would also take her to McBean Park.She might enjoy watching a baseball game.She might also enjoy playing on the swings.Jeeves could push her.After seeing the sites in Lincoln, Jeeves would invite her to be his guest for lunch.Jeeves is not certain where he would take her.Lincoln has so many excellent restaurants.Jeeves would have a very tough time making a choice.So he would ask Ms. Stein to express her preference.That would be the more gentlemanly thing to do.Jeeves knows that Ms. Stein would be impressed with Lincoln.Even though she found that "there's no there, there"in Oakland, Jeeves knows that she would share his view of Lincoln.After her visit, Ms. Stein would have to say "here's a here, here."Jeeves says here, here to Lincoln every day.He is certain that she would too.Today's is not the column that Jeeves originally submitted for publication.Jeeves pulled that column.Today's column was supposed to appear in next week's edition.Instead, Jeeves asked for it to appear now.Today's is also the last column by Jeeves and Kathy.For that reason, Jeeves wanted to end his Lincoln News Messenger career with a column that is more upbeat than his first submission.Both Jeeves and Kathy regret that they will no longer be writing for Lincoln News Messenger.They love Lincoln and they love writing about this city.However, not everyone loves them.Tuesday, they returned to downtown and discovered that eggs had been thrown at Kathy's place of business.Kathy has been threatened before.Like many others in this city, she's met Lincoln's bullies.As you might expect, they're insecure.And they're stupid.Obviously, something either Kathy or Jeeves wrote in this column made them more insecure and more stupid - if that's possible.Until Tuesday, Kathy did not let them bother her.But Tuesday was different.Kathy shares her entryway with another business.As a result, she believes that it would be grossly unfair to expect business neighbors to put up with any attacks directed at her or Jeeves.Kathy's business neighbors and their customers should not have to bear any fallout for whatever she says, writes or does.She and Jeeves apologize to them for any inconvenience or disruption this recent attack may have caused.While Jeeves does not like having to capitulate to vandals, he understands Kathy's dilemma.So, today not only does Jeeves say "here, here" to Lincoln, he also says "thank you" and "goodbye."Kathy Dorsey is owner of Wardrobe, 517 G.
