Sacramento man in jail after allegedly stealing Jeep from Auburn business

A Sacramento man is still in jail after allegedly stealing a Jeep from outside an Auburn business and resisting two peace officers. John Edward Davila, 25, allegedly entered the office of the RV business at 319 Nevada Street around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday and took the keys for a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo off the counter. "He entered the office of this business that's there on 319 (Nevada St.)," said Sgt. Gary Hopping, with the Auburn Police Department. "He came into the office, and actually came in twice. He saw the keys, and the second time he came into the office he grabbed the keys, ran out and took the car."Hopping said Davila does not appear to know anyone at the business. "Apparently it's random, and I don't know the details of where he came from," he said. Hopping said as Davila pulled out of the parking lot and headed toward Enterprise Drive, allegedly nearly hitting another vehicle driving the opposite direction. According to Hopping, a California Highway Patrol officer was driving in the car behind the vehicle that was almost hit.The officer initiated a traffic stop and Davila pulled into the Department of Motor Vehicles parking lot. A Cal Fire arson investigator who heard about the incident on his radio arrived at the lot to assist the officer, Hopping said. Hopping said Davila resisted the two officers when they tried to detain him, and two citizens who saw the "struggle" offered their help. According to Hopping, the officers were cut during the struggle, but did not have to be taken to the hospital. The two citizens and Davila were uninjured. Hopping said the victim of the vehicle theft as well as several witnesses identified Davila as the person who stole the Jeep. Davila was booked into Placer County Jail on several felony and misdemeanor charges, including obstructing or resisting a peace officer, taking a car without the owner's permission, burglary, battery against emergency personnel and presenting false identification, according to jail records. As of Thursday morning Davila remained in custody with a $75,000 bail. ~Bridget Jones
