Scott clinches second Late Model title in a row

Matt Scott drove to his fifth victory of the season Saturday night and clinched his second consecutive Late Model points championship at All American Speedway.Scott held off a challenge by Roseville's Eric Schmidt to win the 50-lap main event on the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program.Schmidt topped qualifying with a lap at 13.953 seconds around the one-third-mile track, and Jason Romero won the trophy dash.Schmidt and Romero caught Scott on lap 19 and began pressuring the leader. Schmidt tried to make a bump and run on Scott in turn two on lap 31 but couldn't complete the pass.Romero moved into second on lap 35 when Schmidt got loose and made a move on Scott on lap 40. Romero drove deep into turn one and passed Scott but got high in turn two, got loose and hit the backstretch wall, ending his night with his first DNF of the year.Scott drove to the checkered flag, followed by Schmidt and Dylan Hutchison.It was a night of firsts in the Modified division. Andy Field was the No. 1 qualifier for the first time at 14.541 seconds, edging Steve Cote by .003 of a second, Mindy McCord earned her first trophy dash victory, and Cody Thompson built a lead of 15 car-lengths en route to his first checkered flag in a main event.Thompson beat Dan Jinkerson by 2.097 seconds. Jason Bamberg finished third.The season championship is down to Jinkerson and Cote with only twin 50s left Saturday.Thompson started on the pole and extended his lead to five car-lengths by the second lap and six car-lengths on the eighth lap.In Street Stock, Mickey Owens took the lead for good on lap 25 and beat a 19-car field. It was his eighth victory this season. Dave Silva was second and No. 1 qualifier Richard Poppert Jr. (15.241) third.Owens and Silva won the heat races, and Mel Wilson collected his first trophy dash win.Silva started on the pole in the 35-lap feature, but Poppert and Owens closed in as Silva approached lap traffic.Poppert passed Silva for the lead on lap 19, and they raced side by side, going three wide around a sandwiched lap car at one point with Owens following.Erick Ray drove to his fourth checkered flag of the season in the Bomber main.Ray qualified third behind pace-setter Cody Rickard (16.168) and two-time track champion Chris Paulson and won the first heat. Richard Perez won the second heat and the trophy dash.Ray passed Eric Bocksberger for the lead on lap three and drove to the win. Perez was second and Paulson third.Several cars drove a memorial lap for Joe Glenn, who passed away Aug. 24. Joe Glenn is the brother of longtime speedway racer Gary Glenn.Holmes wins Pro Series West raceBill McAnally Racing driver Eric Holmes survived two restarts in the final 20 laps and held off rookie Dylan Kwasniewski to win the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Spokane 200 on Saturday at Spokane County Raceway in Washington.It was Holmes' 15th series victory and first this season. Holmes is a three-time Pro Series West champion.Holmes reunited with crew chief Ty Joiner, who helped him win titles in 2006 and 2008, and charged past Kwasniewski, 16, just after that midway break on lap 104."We had a great car all night," said Holmes, who started sixth. "The car was good, moving up. I felt like I was gaining on them at the end of the first 100. The NAPA Toyota team made a great change there at the halfway break. That's all we needed. And I got great restarts."Points leader Greg Pursley finished third, and BMR driver Moses Smith was fifth in the first Pro Series West event at the track since 1979.Pursley increased his lead over Smith to 294 points and will only have to take the green flag in the Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts 150 on Oct. 15 at All American Speedway to clinch his first series title.The Spokane 200 will air at 3 p.m. Thursday on SPEED.ALL AMERICAN SPEEDWAYWhat: NASCAR Whelen All-American SeriesWhen: Saturday.
