Merryhill students place second in math contestStudents from Merryhill School in Roseville placed second overall in a math contest held in Carmichael on Oct. 15. About 80 students in third through fifth grade competed in math tests, including solving word problems, demonstrating their mental math skills and applying their knowledge of maps, graphs and charts.Merryhill's eight-member team, the Dominating Denominators, consisted of Brandon Cheng, Edi Crnogorcevic, Noah Goins, Anthony Kinz, George Liu, Dominik Morris, Tyrel Robert and Brandon Wei.John Adams wins $5,000More than 100 families chose John Adams Academy as the recipient of a $5,000 donation from Westfield Galleria's Give Back to School Program. The money was awarded Oct. 21 and will go toward library and technology expenses.Votes were cast by Westfield shoppers who presented their receipts to the concierge desk, with each dollar spent counting as one point. Additional points were earned by "liking" the mall on Facebook.High school district proposes new textbookRoseville Joint Union High School District is considering a new textbook for adoption. The book is "Looking at the Movies: An Introductory to Film," for use in an International Baccalaureate film course.The textbook is on display through Dec. 2 at the Downtown Roseville Library, Maidu Library, Martha Riley Library, Granite Bay Library, North Highlands/Antelope Branch Library, all high schools in the district and at the district office. Forms are available for public comment. The school board will vote on the textbook adoption Dec. 13.BloodSource honors local schoolsTwo Roseville high schools earned recognition by BloodSource for their campus blood drives. Woodcreek High School earned the "Symbol of Excellence" award in the large school category. Oakmont High School was named "High School of the Year" for the large school category. BloodSource is a nonprofit organization that serves northern and central California, and aims to collect about 700 units of blood every day to meet the needs of patients.iLearn Academy accepting new studentsPlacer County Office of Education's iLearn Academy held its first function of the year, called "Social Studies Scenarios." The academy is an alternative to traditional school designed for families who would like their children to be educated at home.Third through eighth graders researched a picture of a historical event to determine who was in the picture and what event was depicted. Students came dressed as the character in their photo and recited a short dialogue they wrote about their snapshot in time. Kindergarteners through second graders assisted by dressing as history helpers on the city street they created.iLearn Academy has served Placer County K-8 students since 1990 and is currently accepting new students.
