South Placer Fire District recruiting for positions

South Placer Fire District is currently recruiting for a paramedic firefighter and apprentice firefighter. These are currently funded positions that are vacant due to either promotions or voluntary separations. An eligibility list will also be established from these recruitments and may be used to fill future vacancies. The paramedic's primary duty is to respond to emergency situations and perform tasks associated with fire suppression, hazardous condition mitigation, emergency rescue and medical treatment. The apprentice firefighter position is designed to provide career development opportunities in the fire service. To ensure that the district hires the most qualified candidates, the applicants are required to go through a very competitive process. Applications are accepted up until the final filing date as stated on the job announcement and are reviewed to make sure the applicants meet the minimum requirements of the position with the most qualified candidates being selected to move forward in the recruitment process. The examination process may consist of a written examination, a district specific physical ability examination, a practical examination and an oral interview. Candidates must also complete a pre-employment physical evaluation and a background investigation prior to completing the hiring process.Recently, the district established an eligibility list for the battalion chief position. The primary duties of the battalion chief are to plan, direct, coordinate, organize and supervise the operational activities and personnel matters of the five fire stations. The examination process for the battalion chief position consists of a written examination, an oral presentation, an in basket exercise, a conflict resolution/role play scenario and two emergency incident simulation exercises. The district used an examination panel comprised of chiefs from surrounding fire agencies as evaluators. Using evaluators from other agencies helps to give a non bias evaluation of the applicant. This type of examination process allows the district to evaluate the applicants in several different areas and to select the most qualified candidates.
