Roseville girl captures David Oxley Memorial Junior Golf

Monday was a big day for Roseville's Ashley Noda at the 37th annual David Oxley Memorial Junior Golf Tournament.Noda, who captured the girls 11-and-under competition at Diamond Oaks Golf Course, was the only local winner among the eight divisional boys and girls champions of the Roseville Golf Club-sponsored event. The two-time winner of the tourney had a nine-hole total of 44 and won in a playoff. Madelin Gedeon, also of Roseville, was sixth with a 55 and finished closest to the pin at 9 feet, 3 inches.The biggest moment was produced by Sky Mills of Rocklin, whose hole-in-one on the 124-yard No. 3 hole was the first in tournament history. Mills, who shot a 77, finished third in the boys 12-13 competition. Amit Odaiyer of Lodi won the boys 14-15 and overall competition with a 3-under-par 69. Elk Grove's Alexandra Stewart was the girls 12-14 and overall winner thanks to her 5-over-par 77. Both are among the many repeat golfers in the competition, named in honor of a former Roseville Golf Club member's 15-year-old son who drowned in 1967. "The group of kids that came to play this year was a very impressive group," said tournament president Steve Hitchcock. "We had 107 kids scattered from most of Northern California, and not one instance of unsportsman-like behavior."Other local golfers competing included Billy McGowan of Granite Bay, whose 79 placed him 13th in the boys 16-17; Richard Decker of Roseville, eighth in the boys 14-15 with a 77, and Alex Gibbs of Granite Bay, second in the boys 10-11 with a nine-hole total of 40.A competitor to watch could be Cameron Champ of Sacramento, who captured the boys 9-and-under division. Champ has been competing well in the Oxley tournament since he was 4 years old.
