A Hemphill history

n The Hemphill Mansion was erected in 1909 for Wal-lace "Wally" G. Hemphill on the corner of Jones (later Washington Boulevard) and Grove streets, where many of Roseville's elite resided, including William Sawtell, Roseville's first mayor; the Andersons of Roseville Register fame; north side business leader A. B. McRae and his associate John A. Hill; and H. A. Richardson, proprietor of Richardson's Men's Furnishings.n Hemphill, who operated the Roseville Water Compa-ny, resided here with his wife Vivia from 1909 to the early 1930s. During this period, Vivia Hemphill was widely known for her numerous civic and club activities, many of which took place in her home.n The mansion was sold to Dr. James McAnally, a well-known Roseville physician, in 1936. The McAnallys continued to live there until 1969.n The building was acquired in the early 1970s by Robert Caruthers, who announced plans to convert the building into office space and other commercial uses without detracting from its 1909 opulance.n The "House of Zoro," an Italian restaurant operated by Roseville restaurateur Zarko Rozic, occupied the premises for a period of time in the late 1980s.n Around 1990, the property was purchased by Louis Jones, Jr., son of Dr. Louis Jones, Dr. McAnally's partner, and his wife Mary, who said "We didn't want to see it go. We wanted to maintain the stature of the old Hemphill Mansion."n In 1992, Ralph and Barbara Ciaramella of Catering by RJ, recreated the beauty of the early Victorian mansion with an elegant dining experience for private parties and social events with their catering business RJ's Victorian Palms.n From 1999 until today, the mansion has been owned by Caudle Enterprises and operated by Robert Caudle, Jr., who maintains the mansion's turn-of-the-century ambiance as a Victorian-style venue for weddings, banquets and corporate functions.
