Three dead in Rocklin murder-suicide

Three Rocklin residents were found dead at 3 a.m. Wednesday morning in an apparent murder- suicide on the 3500 block of Willard Way.Ronald Stephan Ohland, 43, is suspected of killing his wife Daphne Pettit and their 15-year-old son Steffin Ohland before turning the stolen gun on himself. According to Lt. Stuart Davis of the Rocklin Police Department, Pettit?s 19-year-old son Addam Pettit, also a resident of the home, called 911 to report an issue of domestic violence and as police arrived, shots were fired. The murders, it turns out, occurred just hours before the Placer County Superior Court issued Daphne Pettit a restraining order against Ohland. The couple reportedly has a troubled past, and threats from Ohland leading up to the murders had been recorded by Pettit.Davis said Addam Pettit was questioned by police and released Wednesday afternoon. According to his high school girlfriend Kellie Lynch, the family is survived by another son, Jason Pettit.?The man lived in the home until about a month ago, and appeared in the middle of the night,? said Davis. ?The (19-year-old) went to bed early, and was awakened by the disturbance. He then called 911.?Davis said Ohland was staying with family members in Oregon for the past month and stole the gun from them.Police did not remove the bodies until 2:45 p.m. Wednesday after crime scene investigators detailed the scene. Neighbors said the family had moved into the house a few months ago and kept to themselves. Steffen Ohland was a sophomore at Del Oro High School in Loomis.?They only lived there three or four months,? said neighbor Charles Rodriguez. ?I know about these kinds of things ? domestic violence isn?t a good thing for anybody. She kicked him out of the house, and now he came back.?Rodriguez said he knows most of his neighbors by name, but never said more than ?hi? to this family.?I didn?t know them, but a murder happened two houses away from mine. That?s a trip,? Rodriguez said.Willard Way mailman Nick Martinez remembered one encounter with Ronald Ohalnd, but considered the family to be quiet otherwise.It?s unknown where Addam Pettit is staying at this time. At the Willard Way home, friends and neighbors including Lynch have left letters, flowers, stuffed animals and a Christmas tree in support. They are hoping to hear from him soon.?I don?t know what Addam?s going to do,? Lynch said. ?He used to say that his mom and Steffen were all that he had.?Lynch had warm thoughts of the deceased.?Steffen was like a little brother to me,? Lynch said. ?I remember when Addam and I were in high school we?d go to pick Steffen up from his elementary school. We pretended like we were married, and picking up our son.?It?s probably not the best way to say it, but with Steffen, it was like ?the third time?s the charm,?? Lynch said. ?His brothers struggled through school, but Steffen was always successful. He was able to learn from the mistakes made by his brother?s before him.
