Rocklin boy, 8, killed in DUI hit and run

More than 450 friends, family members and strangers came together Monday evening to remember Emmett Jensen, 8, who pitched his last Little League baseball game on Saturday.As a show of support to his family, a candlelight procession made its way past the spot where the boy was struck by a Nissan pickup on Stanford Ranch Road. The pickup was allegedly driven by Aaron Michael Munso, 33, of Rocklin. Munso was arrested by Rocklin Police on counts of drunken driving, hit and run and vehicular manslaughter on Saturday.Jensen and his father Jeff, wearing helmets, were riding their bicycles home from Emmett's ballgame at Twin Oaks Park. Munso's truck veered onto the shoulder and into the bike lane at Stanford Ranch Road near Victory Lane. The truck struck the boy at approximately 1:30 p.m. Munso then fled the scene without checking on Emmett's injuries, according to Lt. Stuart Davis of the Rocklin Police Department. According to Davis, Emmett was taken by ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center where, despite rescue efforts, the boy died from injuries sustained in the collision.Rocklin Fire Department Station 2 at Crest Avenue, within walking distance of the hit and run scene, responded to the 911 call. "Those calls are always tough," Fire Chief Bill Mikesell said. "This was one of those with a severe head trauma. It was one of those tragedies where the worst of our society comes in contact with those who are doing what they are supposed to n obeying the laws."Mikesell said the department's emergency response team did what they could, but knew when Emmett was transported from the scene that he probably wouldn't make it. A battalion chief took the dad to the hospital. He stated that some witnesses at the scene indicated Munso had a child in the truck with him. "It was reported to me that he had a child in the back end of the pick up unsecured, but that was not confirmed. This kind of thing just breaks your heart. I felt so bad that the dad had to witness this," Mikesell said. According to Davis, Rocklin Police officers located Munso and his pickup at Gold Circle Drive. Witnesses had written down the license plate number and a woman walking in the area reported she narrowly missed injury when Munso's truck almost struck her. Munso was taken into custody and charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony driving under the influence of alcohol and felony hit-and-run. He was booked in Auburn at the Placer County Jail without possibility of bail.The wave of love and support brought to the family by the sea of candlelight on Monday included Emmett's Granite Bay Montessori School classmates, Rocklin Little League coach Scott Wilson and Giants teammates. After weaving its way to the Jensen's Crest Sunset Heights home from Long's Drug Store, and past the site where Jensen was hit, those in the vigil were met by Emmett's dad, mom DeeDee, sisters Haley, 9, 4-month-old Jessica and other family members who said they were touched by the many people who attended. "We appreciate the support and you all being here," said Jeff Jensen. "Now go on home to your kids and give them a big hug."Services for Emmett are at Adventure Church, 6401 Stanford Ranch Road in Rocklin on Thursday at noon.
